Note: The Centris/Quadra 650 shares the same logic board and case as the Quadra 650, so this guide applies to both models.

Regular Cleaning

Warning: The power supply contains high-voltage components. Discharge capacitors before servicing.

Logic Board โ€“ Tantalum Capacitors

Unlike many Macs of this era, the Centris/Quadra 650 logic board uses tantalum capacitors rather than electrolytic capacitors. Tantalum caps do not leak like electrolytics, but they can fail short-circuit (sometimes with smoke or flame).

Signs of tantalum capacitor failure:

  • System won't power on
  • Visible burn marks near a capacitor
  • Burning smell from logic board

If a tantalum cap fails, it must be replaced, but preventive recapping is not necessary.

PRAM Battery Damage
