LaserWriter and LaserWriter Plus is Apple's 1986 owner's manual for the LaserWriter and LaserWriter Plus printers, part number 030-1296-A. It has 146 printed pages (vii front pages, 1-146); the scan has 155.[1] It was written for owners using a Macintosh 512K, Macintosh Plus or Macintosh XL, and covers both printers and the LaserWriter Plus Kit that upgrades a LaserWriter to a Plus.[2]

Appendix B gives Apple's specification. The engine is a Canon LBP-CX; the controller has a 12 MHz 68000, ½ MB of ROM, 1½ MB of RAM and AppleTalk and RS-232C interfaces. Print resolution is 300 dpi, speed up to eight pages per minute, and the recommended duty cycle up to 4,000 pages per month. Power is 115 V AC ±10% 60 Hz (US) or 220 or 240 V AC ±10% 50 Hz (Europe). The printer is 18.5 in wide, 16.2 in deep (28.2 in with trays), 11.5 in high and weighs 77 lb.[3] The ordering list gives M0156 (110 V) and M0156Z (220 V) for the LaserWriter, M0191 for the LaserWriter Plus Kit and M0180 for the toner cartridge.[3]

At power-on the green light flashes while the printer warms up, the yellow light flashes while it processes the test page, and a test page appears within about two minutes. The test page shows the mode-switch position and the number of pages printed. A green test light on the back of the printer means the controller electronics are not working.[4] Appendix C lists the status lights, the four-position mode switch (AppleTalk, Special, 9600, 1200) and the pin assignments of the 9-pin RS-422 port (3 signal ground, 4 and 5 transmit data, 8 and 9 receive data) and the 25-pin RS-232 port (2 transmit data, 3 receive data, 4 RTS, 7 signal ground, 20 DTR).[5]

The owner maintenance in Chapter 4 is cartridge replacement, the cleaning pad, cleaning the transfer guide, transfer wire and rollers, and replacing or cleaning the separation belt. Apple says to clean the belt with water, not alcohol, when a black line runs down the right side of printed pages.[6]
