Summary
[edit | edit source]A lithium-ion cell exploding during a deliberate destructive test, struck with a hammer on a concrete slab. Crushing or puncturing a charged cell creates an internal short, which drives the cell into thermal runaway: the electrolyte and electrode material burn as a violent shower of incandescent sparks. This is why damaged cells are never charged, crushed or cut. Used on the Battery Refurbishment guide.
