Apple Service Guide Laserwriter Printers Volume Iii July 1995

The Apple Service Guide for LaserWriter Printers, Volume 3 is Apple's July 1995 field-service booklet for the LaserWriter 16/600 PS, LaserWriter Select 360, Personal LaserWriter 320 and LaserWriter 4/600 PS, part number 072-0142. It has ten front pages and 201 numbered pages; this scan has 208 PDF pages.[1] Like Volume 2, it presents material from the Service Source CD in a format for technicians working at the customer's site.[1]

Page numbers are the guide's own. In this scan, add ten for the PDF page in the introduction and safety section, nine in chapter 1, eight in chapters 2 and 3, and seven in chapter 4. The fold-out wiring diagrams are bound out of sequence: p. 97 is PDF p. 33, p. 161 is PDF p. 107 (again at PDF p. 168) and p. 201 is PDF p. 170.[1]

What it settles

LaserWriter 16/600 PS: Canon LBP-P430 engine; 600 dpi; 17.1 pages per minute (letter) or 16.2 (A4); AMD 29030 RISC processor at 25 MHz; 8 MB RAM expandable to 32 MB; 4 MB ROM; QuickDraw, PostScript Level 2 and HP PCL5; about 0.79 kW; 19.1 kg with cassette.[2] The POST tests the SIMM/CPU, I/O controller, engine and any fax card or hard drive, putting out one LED per stage passed; on an error it flashes the toner and jam LEDs alternately. The Extended POST, run by the technician with a serial loopback cable, reports about a dozen more specific codes, charted in Figure 12.[3] After a fusing-system failure the DC controller charges capacitor C208 to prevent overheating; leave the power off for about 10 minutes, or unplug the printer, remove the rear panel, I/O controller board and I/O shield, and jumper the two wires at the base of C208.[4]

LaserWriter Select 360: Fuji Xerox P1 engine, 600 dpi (300 dpi in PCL mode), 10 pages per minute. The specification table repeats the Select Service Source's height of "8.0 in. (25.3 cm)".[5]

Personal LaserWriter 320 and LaserWriter 4/600 PS: Canon P90 engine, 300 dpi (320) or 600 dpi (4/600 PS), about 4 pages per minute; both need 4 MB of RAM in total to print edge to edge on legal paper.[6]

The safety section says to leave the printer switched off for at least 5 minutes before working on the fuser.[1]

What this guide does not contain

There are no schematics and no component values. The board figures locate connectors, switches and a few named parts (such as C208); the wiring diagrams show connections between assemblies. The parts lists cover Apple's service modules and spares.[1]
