Atari's field procedure is the SALT II diagnostic cartridge, and Sections 3 and 7 of the field service manual are written around it — colour bar, grey bar, keyboard, tone, console switch, ROM verify, RAM and port tests, each with a flowchart.<ref name="fsm" /> With no cartridge and no powered drive attached, a healthy 800 boots to Memo Pad.<ref name="faq" />
