The specification gives the main battery as 6.5 V, while the exploded view lists it as the "6 V Main Battery", 076-0376, and Low End Mac gives 6 V.<ref name="ss" /><ref name="lem" /> The depth is printed as "14.83 in. (365.25 mm)", and 365.25 mm is 14.38 in.<ref name="ss" /> Apple's specification page gives the adapter input as 70-270 V; the Service Source gives 85-270 V.<ref name="sp140" /><ref name="ss" /> == Hardware == === Power system === The Portable runs from its main battery, and the adapter charges that battery. The power manager (PMGR) chip on the logic board controls power, sleep and charging and holds the 128 bytes of PRAM.<ref name="ss" /><ref name="tn">TinkerDifferent forum thread [https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/portable-and-powerbook-100-technical-note-pram-backlight-and-rom-diff.4995/ "Portable and PowerBook 100 Technical Note: PRAM, Backlight, and ROM Diff"], David Cook, January 2026. 128 bytes of PRAM held in the Power Manager; supported PRAM ranges; detecting the backlit model; identical ROM in both models. Secondary source.</ref> Low End Mac warns that the hard disk will not spin up without a charged battery fitted, and that a battery discharged below 5.4 V becomes unusable.<ref name="lembl" /> A switch at the battery cover connects the logic board to the main battery when the cover is fitted and to the 9 V backup battery when it is off, and both power wires to logic board connector J17 are joined in Apple's harness.<ref name="cook" /> Apple warns that leaving the battery cover off with the main battery out keeps power on the logic board, so modules removed or fitted in that state can be damaged.<ref name="ss" /> On the M5120, a separate hybrid module on the logic board provides the always-on 5 V rail, switches the 12 V and β5 V supplies, charges the battery and cuts the machine off at low battery voltage. Androda, who made a replacement, describes the originals as failing from capacitor leakage and from cracked coatings on their trimmed resistors.<ref name="hybrid">TinkerDifferent forum thread [https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/recreating-macintosh-portable-hybrid-module.899/ "Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module"], Androda, February-March 2022. Functions of the hybrid module and its failure modes. Secondary source.</ref> The M5126 has the same circuit built directly on the logic board, next to capacitors around the keyboard and trackball connector.<ref name="gotchas" /> === Memory === The logic board carries 1 MB, and one slot takes a RAM card. Static RAM cards from 1 to 8 MB fit the original board, to a 9 MB maximum; the backlit board takes pseudostatic cards from 1 to 7 MB, to 8 MB. The two card types are not interchangeable. Apple's check is the RAM connector: a notched connector takes a pseudostatic card.<ref name="ss" /><ref name="amg" /> The Portable runs in 24-bit addressing only and has no virtual memory.<ref name="lem" /><ref name="amg" /> === Display and video port === The 640 Γ 400 active-matrix panel is made by Hosiden.<ref name="lem" /> Apple accepts up to five pixels that never turn on; six or more, or any pixel that stays black, means a new display.<ref name="ss" /> The DA-15 video port on the back is not a VGA port; David Cook warns never to connect a VGA cable directly to it, and uses a purpose-made adapter for an external monitor.<ref name="cook" /> === Storage === The internal hard disk is a Conner CP-3045 with a proprietary connector; a standard SCSI drive needs an adapter.<ref name="lem" /> Owners report that the Conner drives' seals and head bumpers turn to goo.<ref name="gotchas" /> == Common problems == * No power, or the machine shuts down at once, with a flat or missing battery; see [[Macintosh Portable Battery Replacement]]. * Leaking surface-mount electrolytic capacitors and broken traces; see [[Macintosh Portable Capacitor Replacement Guide]]. * A leaking 9 V backup battery corroding traces near the memory chips.<ref name="gotchas" /> * A failed hybrid module (M5120) or regulation circuit (M5126), which can put adapter voltage on the 5 V rail; owners link this to dead power manager and SWIM chips.<ref name="gotchas" /> * Damage from the wrong power adapter or a badly wired bench supply.<ref name="cook" /> Fault-finding is on [[Macintosh Portable Troubleshooting]]. == Maintenance and repair == * [[Macintosh Portable General Maintenance]] * [[Macintosh Portable Troubleshooting]] * [[Macintosh Portable Capacitor Replacement Guide]] * [[Macintosh Portable Battery Replacement]] == Documentation == * [[Macintosh Portable Service Source]]: Apple's service manual for both models. * [[Apple Memory Guide]]: RAM card types and sizes.
