IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Hardware Maintenance and Service
The IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Hardware Maintenance and Service manual, First Edition, August 1985. 319 pages. The Wheelprinter E is IBM's daisywheel office printer.
Its preface notes that "the diagnostic section ... is intended to be used as a stand-alone document to service the IBM Wheelprinter E" — unlike the PS/2 pamphlets, this one does not require a companion binder.
What it contains
- Chapter 1, Introduction — general description of the printer.
- Chapter 2, Introduction to Diagnostic Aids — what diagnostic aids exist for the machine.
- Chapter 3, Problem Isolation Charts (PICs) — step-by-step isolation to the failing FRU.
- Chapter 4, Removals and Installations.
- Chapter 5, Adjustments — used during diagnostics or after fitting a FRU.
- Chapter 6, Parts Catalog — illustrations and FRU part numbers.
Associated documentation named in the preface, with both item and form numbers: IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Guide to Operations, item 1279889 (form S544-4077); IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Technical Reference, item 1279887 (form S544-4078); Sheetfeed Guide to Operations, item 6373115 (form GA23-1034); and the Sheetfeed Hardware Maintenance manual.
What it does not contain
Module level. Like every IBM service manual of the period, this one isolates a fault to a field-replaceable unit and replaces it. There are no schematics, no component values and no board-level parts list — the logic card, the power supply and each motor or sensor are single line items in the parts catalogue, identified by FRU part number.
The Technical Reference named above — which would carry the interface and command-set detail — is a separate book and is not hosted here.
What it settles
Chapter 5 matters more on a daisywheel than on most machines. Print quality on a 5223 depends on mechanical adjustments that drift, and IBM specifies them here with the sequence to follow after a FRU is replaced. An adjustment done out of order will not hold.
