The Macintosh Portrait Display volume of Apple's Service Source is Apple's 108-page module-level service manual for the Macintosh Portrait Display, Apple's 15-inch monochrome portrait monitor. The PDF was created on 5 December 1995 for the Service Source CD. Chapters are numbered from page 1 each.

Apple made domestic and international versions of the Portrait Display, and their troubleshooting and repair procedures differ. This manual covers the domestic version only; Apple refers the international "Series B" to a separate manual (Basics p. 1).

  • Specifications: 15-inch screen, P4 (white) phosphor; 640 × 870 pixels at 80 dpi; 75 Hz vertical, 68.85 kHz horizontal, 52 MHz dot clock; active area 8 × 10.87 in (203 × 276 mm); universal supply 90-270 V AC, 47-63 Hz, 75 W maximum; 16 kg (Specifications pp. 1-4).
  • Monitor Distortion (Basics pp. 2-5): Apple's list of environmental distortions (metal furniture, fluorescent lights, other monitors and appliances) to rule out before adjusting or repairing a distorted raster.
  • Symptom charts, including the order for no raster with the LED off: video cable, power cord, internal power connections, fuse, power/sweep board, video board (Troubleshooting p. 2).
  • Geometry targets (Adjustments pp. 9-17): raster width 8 in ± 1/8 in (203 ± 2 mm), height 10 7/8 in ± 1/8 in (276 ± 2 mm), side margins about 1/4 in (7-8 mm).
  • Video Without Screen Control (p. 31): with shielded clip leads on TP1 and TP2 of the CRT board, set the BIAS control for 55 V DC ± 1.0 V. Apple asks for the monitor to be switched off before connecting or removing the clips.
  • Light Meter Setup (pp. 3-8) covers the R77 (Apple part 076-0310), L-248 and 246 light meters.

What this manual does not contain

edit
  • No schematics, no component-level parts list and no component values.
  • The international "Series B" display.
  • No anode (EHT) voltage figure; the only test-point voltage is the 55 V bias setting.
  • Two separate video procedures, "With Screen Control" and "Without Screen Control"; Apple directs the technician to the second if the monitor has no screen control, so check which one applies before starting.

The Portrait Display contains a CRT and a live power/sweep board. Apple's adjustments are made from the rear with a mirror to view the screen. Follow CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside one.
