IBM PS2 Model 55SX HITR Supplement

The IBM PS/2 Model 55 Supplement for the Hardware Interface and BIOS Interface Technical References, dated 7 February 1989, part number 01F0242, form number S01F-0242-00. 72 pages.

IBM shipped the PS/2 technical references as ring binders and issued new models as supplements to be filed into them. This is the Model 55 SX package.

What it contains

IBM's own filing instructions, which are the most informative part:

  1. Insert the tab labelled "Power Supply (Type 3)" into the Hardware Interface Technical Reference, behind the existing section "Power Supply (Types 1 and 2)", then insert the new Power Supply (Type 3) pages behind it.
  2. Insert the tab labelled "Model 55" at the back of the Hardware Interface Technical Reference and file the IBM Personal System/2 Model 55 Technical Reference pages behind it.
  3. File the Model 55 Supplement page behind the Supplements tab in the BIOS Interface Technical Reference.

The Model 55 technical reference pages themselves follow, and are the same material later published bound as the February 1989 technical reference.

What it does not contain

No text layer — an image-only scan.

This is a loose-leaf update package, not a book. It has no contents page, no index and no standalone narrative: the first pages are IBM's filing instructions, followed by hard-tab separator sheets that say "Insert the hard tab labeled ... here, then discard this page", followed by the replacement pages themselves. Read it knowing that structure, or the first few pages look like a scanning error.

It contains no FRU numbers, no removal procedures, no component values and no schematics.

What it settles

IBM classified PS/2 power supplies by type, and there are at least three. The Hardware Interface Technical Reference carried a section called "Power Supply (Types 1 and 2)", and this supplement adds "Power Supply (Type 3)" for the Model 55. When a PS/2 page on this wiki refers to a "Type 1" or "Type 2" supply, that is IBM's own terminology and this is where the third type enters the record.
