IBM 3270 Personal Computer Maintenance Information, order number SY27-2567-2 (third edition, October 1984), is IBM's field service manual for the IBM 3270 PC (machine type 5271). 721 pages.

What it contains

  • Safety inspection checklist — including the instruction that a pop rivet or a bristle screw prevents access to the inside of the system unit power supply, and that the inside of the monitor is not to be accessed by service personnel.
  • Problem isolation charts — error code to FRU tables, keyboard and display connector voltage checks, and the acceptable-reading table for voltages the manual describes as "approximately" a given value.
  • Locations (section 4) — the system board diagram (eight expansion slots J1 to J8, 8088 processor, math coprocessor socket, ROM, the system configuration DIP switch, keyboard connector J9, power connectors P8 and P9, speaker output P3 and the colour trimmer capacitor), the system unit models, and the display and printer units.
  • Removals and replacements, switch settings, and section 7, the illustrated parts catalogue for the 5271 system unit, the 5161 Expansion Unit, the 5151 Monochrome Display, the 5272 Color Display, the diskette and fixed disk drives, the keyboard and the 5152 printer.

Figures worth knowing about:

  • 5271 system unit — system board 8529254, power supply 6347754 (120 V) and 6347755 (240 V), speaker and cable 8529143, and the full adapter card list including the Display Adapter, All Points Addressable Adapter, Programmed Symbols Adapter, Keyboard Adapter, NMI Keyboard Adapter and Distributed Function Communication Adapter.
  • 5151 Monochrome Display — broken down to analogue card, PC card, transformer and fuse (0.75 A for 120 V, 0.5 A for 220/240 V).
  • 5272 Color Display — listed as a single Display Assembly per marketing region, with no internal parts at all.

What it does not contain

No capacitance values anywhere, and no schematics. The manual is FRU-level throughout. The 5272 colour display in particular is a sealed unit as far as IBM's documentation is concerned.
