Acorn A400-1 and R140 Service Manual

The Acorn A400/1 & R140 Service Manual (Acorn Computers Limited, 1989) is Acorn's dealer service manual for the A410/1, A420/1 and A440/1, and for the R140 RISC iX workstation, all of which are built on the same Acorn Universal Board.

What it contains

• Technical specification for the A4x0/1 range, including the internal backup batteries — two LR06 (AA size) 1.5 V manganese alkaline cells, which Acorn specified for annual replacement.
• System description of the Universal Board with the MEMC1a memory controller.
• Disassembly and assembly, and upgrading.
• Links, plugs and sockets, including the battery connector PL10.
• Functional test suite — memory, battery-backed RAM, hard disc, ports, disc interface, real time, audio, video, keyboard and mouse — with the action to take on each failure.
• Fault diagnosis for a dead and for a partly working computer.
• Parts lists.

What it does not contain

It does not cover the original 1987 A410/A440 board (see the Archimedes 440 Service Manual) or the A540 (see the Acorn Archimedes 500 Series and R200 Series Service Manual). It does not document the power supply internally.
