Amstrad DMP1 Printer Service Manual

Revision as of 23:15, 24 September 2026 by Josh (talk | contribs) (Real documentation page: contents, Amstrad's full print and environmental specification incl. 25 W printing / 10 W standby and the DDK 57LE-40360-270B-D3 interface connector, and the honest finding that the 'electrical parts list' publishes only two capacitors (both 3300 uF 50 V) - no other capacitor values exist in this document)

The DMP1 Printer Service Manual is Amstrad Consumer Electronics plc's own service manual for the DMP1 dot-matrix printer, 24 pages, cover price £5.00. It carries a text layer and is searchable.

Contents

Amstrad's numbered sections:

  • [1] Specifications — print specifications and environment
  • [2] Interface — input connector and signal pinout, and the interface timing
  • Line feed flowchart
  • [5] Timing diagram — initialisation sequence, start of printing, carrier return operation
  • Control PCB pattern — soldering side and component side
  • Parts list and [12] exploded view
  • Wiring, PCB and harness colour diagrams
  • [9] Cautions
  • [10] Troubleshooting — symptom, possible cause and remedy, keyed to the exploded-view reference numbers
  • [12] Adjustments — including the dot sensor unit adjustment and the print head position adjustment
  • Electrical parts list — 22

What it settles

Print and environmental specification, from section [1]:

Amstrad DMP1
Item Amstrad's figure
Print method Impact dot matrix, Seikosha uni-hammer
Print direction Unidirectional, left to right
Character matrix 5 wide × 7 high, plus 1 space
Dot spacing 1/60 inch horizontal × 1/63 inch vertical
Character pitch / columns 10 characters per inch, 80 columns (480 dot columns) per line
Print speed 50 cps
Line feed 6 or 9 lines per inch; 10 lines/s at 6 lpi, 15 lines/s at 9 lpi
Multiple copies two including the original, 0.15 mm total thickness or less
Paper width 4.5 to 10 inches
Power 220/240 V AC ±10 %, 50 Hz
Consumption 25 W printing, 10 W standby
Temperature 5 to 40 °C
Humidity 20 to 80 %, non-condensing

The interface is a DDK 36-pin bail-lock connector, type 57LE-40360-270B-D3, with the full Centronics-style pinout printed.

What this manual does not contain

  • The electrical parts list is not a full bill of materials. Page 22 lists the ICs by type and part number (74LS04, 74LS374, 74LS32, 74LS373, HM6116P-4, ULN2003, the MBL8039 CPU, the MBM2732 ROM, 7404, 74LS74, the MBL8243 I/O and the GP-DR-2 driver), the transistors and the µA7805UC regulator, the diodes and bridge rectifier, the ceramic oscillator, the DIP switch, four resistor arrays and two power resistors — and then only two capacitors, both 3300 µF / 50 V (parts 170712 and 170713). No other capacitor values are published. Anything else on this board has to be read off the part itself.
  • No circuit diagram with component designators — the PCB pattern drawings show the tracks and component outlines, not a schematic with values.
  • No print head part number or head replacement procedure beyond the position adjustment.
  • Nothing on the DMP2000, DMP3000, DMP4000 or LQ3500.
