IBM PS2 XGA Display Adapter A Technical Reference (September 1990)
The IBM Personal System/2 XGA Display Adapter/A Technical Reference, First Edition (September 1990), is IBM's 19-page hardware reference for the XGA Display Adapter/A card itself. It is deliberately short: the programming model is in the separate XGA Adapter Interface Technical Reference, and this book covers the physical card.
What it contains

- Specifications (3) — the power requirements table and the board layouts for the 512 KB and 1 MB versions.
- Extension Slots (5) — the slot types available in PS/2 system units, illustrated.
- Default VGA (6) and Display Support (7).
- Display Connector (7–8) — the connector and its signal assignments.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]No schematic, no parts list, no component values, no FRU numbers and no removal procedure. The service-side material is in the Hardware Maintenance Reference and Service supplements named in its own preface; of those, only the XGA-2 pair is hosted here.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Power draw — the 512 KB card takes 1.6 A / 8.0 W at +5.0 V; the 1 MB card takes 1.9 A / 9.5 W at +5.0 V. Compare that with the Micro Channel per-slot limit of 1.6 A at +5 V given in the model technical references: the 1 MB XGA Display Adapter/A exceeds the nominal per-connector +5 V budget, which is worth knowing on a heavily loaded machine.
- Slot compatibility — it is a 32/16-bit adapter with a Base Video Extension Connector, and it fits any 16-bit or 32-bit Micro Channel slot except the Auxiliary Video extension slot.
