LaserWriter Select Service Source

The LaserWriter Select volume of Apple's Service Source is a 256-page service manual covering the LaserWriter Select 300, 310 and 360. The PDF was distilled on 26 October 1995.

Like the LaserWriter II volume, this is not a module-level-only manual: it carries board locator diagrams, a full wiring diagram, and the printers' own diagnostic LED codes.

What it settles

• Engines: Select 300/310 use the Fuji Xerox P0 engine; the Select 360 uses the Fuji Xerox P1 engine. Single-component dry toner, semiconductor laser. Resolution 300 dpi on the 300/310; 600 dpi on the 360 (300 dpi in PCL mode).
• Logic boards: Select 300 has no CPU of its own (host-based QuickDraw printing); Select 310 AMD Am29205 at 16 MHz with 1.5 MB DRAM expandable to 5.5 MB and 1 MB ROM; Select 360 AMD Am29200 at 15 MHz with 7 MB (3 MB soldered) expandable to 16 MB and 4 MB ROM. If a 16 MB SIMM is fitted to a 360, the 3 MB of soldered RAM is not used.
• Introduction dates: Select 300/310 February 1993; 500-sheet feeder August 1993; Select 360 October 1993.
• Electrical: US/Japan 100-115 VAC, 50-60 Hz; Europe/Australia 220-240 VAC, 50 Hz. Power consumption 450 W maximum at either 115 V or 220 V.
• Power-On Self Test. The 310 and 360 run a POST at every power-on; the Select 300 does not. Apple prints the LED sequence, ending with the Jam LED extinguishing when the engine reports no errors.
• 360 printer diagnostic. Only the Select 360 has diagnostic LEDs. Remove the jumper from JMP1 on the I/O controller if fitted, set the rear-panel mode switch to 9, and read the repeating sequence: I/O Controller Error, SIMM Error, Engine Controller Error, Fuser Error, Laser Error, Engine Error. A SIMM error can simply mean too little memory - the 360 needs a minimum of 7 MB.

The board diagrams label connectors and switches (P11-P21, P31, P32, P50, P51, P56, J3, JP2, J57, SW1-SW4, TR/CR/DB and RTN1/RTN2 on the high-voltage supply), which makes them usable for tracing a loom.

What this manual does not contain

No schematic and no component values. The circuit board diagrams are locators; the wiring diagram shows interconnection. Apple notes the wiring diagram is too small to read at 100% on screen and suggests printing it at 300 dpi or better. There is no fuse rating and no supply-rail tolerance table.

Safety: a laser printer's fuser runs at several hundred degrees and its high-voltage supply drives the corona and developer bias. Let the fuser cool for at least five minutes (ten on the Pro 600/630) before touching it, and follow the manual's own capacitor-discharge step where one is given. The mains side of the DC power supply is live in the usual way; treat it as you would any switched-mode supply.
