Contents
- Specifications (PDF pp. 3-7): characteristics, controls, physical and electrical, operating environment
- Troubleshooting (PDF pp. 9-15): symptom charts for no raster, geometry, synchronisation, video and miscellaneous faults
- Take Apart (PDF pp. 17-36): rear cover, main board, CRT, contrast/brightness assembly, LED
- Adjustments (PDF pp. 38-59): geometry and focus, video, light meter set-up
- Exploded View (PDF pp. 60-61)
What it settles
The symptom charts work at module level. No raster with the LED off leads to the cables, the internal power connections, a blown fuse and then the main board; no raster with the LED on leads to the brightness and contrast knobs, the sub-brightness control, the main board, the contrast/brightness assembly and the CRT.[3]
The Adjustments chapter sets horizontal size to 8 7/16 in (213.5 mm, ±2 mm) and vertical height to 6 5/16 in (159.5 mm, ±2 mm) with the H-SIZE, H-CENT, V-HEIGHT and V-CENT controls, then focus with the focus control. Apple says not to attempt yoke adjustments. Geometry is to be set whenever the main board is replaced. The video adjustment sets sub-brightness on a grey-bars pattern and sub-contrast to 33 foot-lamberts (±3) on an all-white screen, measured with a light meter such as Apple's R77 (part number 076-0310). Test patterns come from the Display Service Utility.[4]
The exploded view gives Apple part numbers: main board 661-0615, CRT assembly 076-0382, fuse 941-5225, brightness and contrast pots 109-1022 and 109-1020, bezel 658-8351, rear cover 658-8352, CPU-to-monitor cable 590-4510 and power cable 590-0370.[5]
The Take Apart procedures say to discharge the CRT and remove the anode cap before removing the main board, and never to wear a grounding wrist strap until the CRT has been discharged. See CRT Discharge Procedure.[6]
What this manual does not contain
There is no schematic, no component values and no board-level test points. The fuse is listed by part number only, with no rating. There is no power-supply voltage adjustment or rail tolerance; the "+5 V 4.85-5.15 V / +12 V 11.9-12.7 V" procedure used on some compact Macintosh pages does not come from this manual.[1]
