IBM PS2 Model P70 386 Hardware Maintenance Reference
The IBM PS/2 P70 386 HMR (Hardware Maintenance Reference) is IBM's service pamphlet for the Personal System/2 Model P70 386 (type 8573), the portable Micro Channel machine with a gas-plasma display. Its front page gives part number 64F3994, form number S64F-3994-00 and the date 21 March 1990; the edition notice says First Edition (March 1990). The PDF has 56 pages.
The PDF is a text conversion of IBM's softcopy edition. Every illustration is replaced by a placeholder line ("PICTURE 1" to "PICTURE 36"), and pages are numbered within each topic (for example "3.1 - 1"), so cite it by topic number.
The companion pamphlet is the P70 386 HMS (15F2198), which holds the checkout procedure, the Symptom-to-FRU Index and the parts list.

Figures a repairer can use
[edit | edit source]- Power supply (3.1): 90 W, switching automatically between 100-125 V and 200-240 V AC, 50 or 60 Hz. Minimum under-voltage sense levels are +4.5 V on the +5 V output, +10.8 V on +12 V and -10.2 V on -12 V. The power-good signal lights the green power-good light on the front; if that light is off, the supply is not working.
- Specifications (4.0): 465 mm wide, 303 mm high and 126 mm deep; 9 kg (20 lb). Input 90-137 V or 180-264 V AC, sine wave required. Heat output 150 W.
- Special tools (5.0): a volt-ohm meter similar to the Triplett Model 310, and the Tri-Connector wrap plug, IBM part 72X8546, which replaces the older printer, serial and communications wrap plugs.
- Memory (3.3): at least 2 MB on the system board, 8 MB maximum on the board. The fixed disk parks its heads itself at power-off (2.2).
- Plasma-display assembly (1050): IBM warns that the panel contains a small amount of mercury, cadmium and lead, and must be disposed of under local regulations.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]None of the illustrations survive in this PDF. The removal procedures refer to numbered arrows and callouts that are on the missing pictures, and the whole of section 7 (locations) is placeholders. The safety information, the general diskette-drive notes and the diagnostics are not here either: the pamphlet refers the reader to the Hardware Maintenance Reference General Information and Micro Channel Diagnostics pamphlets filed in the same binder. There is no parts list (that is in the HMS), no schematic and no component value; IBM's service method for the P70 was replacement of field-replaceable units.
