The IBM PS/2 Model P70 386 HMS (Hardware Maintenance Service) is IBM's fault-isolation and parts pamphlet for the Personal System/2 Model P70 386 (type 8573). The front page gives part number 15F2198, form number S15F-2198-00 and the date 21 March 1990; the edition notice says First Edition (March 1990). The PDF has 33 pages. It is a text conversion of IBM's softcopy edition, numbered by topic ("4.0 - 1"), with its three illustrations replaced by placeholders.

IBM describes it on the front page as containing "procedures for isolating problems to a FRU, a Symptom-to-FRU Index, and a parts listing", to be used with the general IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference (part number 15F2190) and Hardware Maintenance Service (part number 15F2200) manuals. The removals, locations and specifications for the P70 are in the companion P70 386 HMR (64F3994).

P70 386 supply test limits (HMS topic 4.0)
Rail Minimum Maximum Ground pin Positive pin
+5 V +4.8 V +5.2 V 6, 7 or 8 3, 4 or 5
+12 V +11.5 V +12.6 V 6, 7 or 8 2
-12 V -11.5 V -12.6 V 6, 7 or 8 1

IBM's instruction is to replace the supply if the voltages are wrong or the fan is not running (4.0). The undetermined-problem procedure (3.0) removes non-IBM devices, external devices, the math coprocessor and adapters one at a time, then checks the supply, then replaces the system board.

Memory errors (10.0): 00011000 is a system-board parity check, 00011100 a memory-expansion adapter parity check, and 00021500 or 00021600 a failing system-board memory module kit.

Main FRU numbers (13.0):

  • Power supply 38F4734; plasma-display assembly 38F4737; plasma-display adapter 38F4686; battery 72X8498.
  • System board, 16 MHz: 38F5969 (serial numbers xxxx49999 or earlier) or 56F9084 (xxxx50001 or later). 20 MHz: 65X1564 or 56F9085, split the same way.
  • 1.44 MB diskette drive 38F5936; 30, 60 and 120 MB ESDI fixed disks 6128287, 90X8627 and 90X9286.

Early machines need several parts changed together. For serial numbers 230000001 to 230004000 and 231000001 to 231001000, IBM says to check the plasma-display assembly: if its FRU number is not 38F4737 and the supply-to-display power cable is not grey, replace the plasma-display assembly, plasma-display adapter, power supply and plasma-display power cable (38F5939) at the same time (13.0, supplemental parts).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

The general safety information and safety inspection guide are in the separate Hardware Maintenance Service General Information pamphlet, which is not part of this PDF. There are no removal procedures or location drawings (those are in the HMR), no schematic and no component values: the supply, the plasma display and its adapter are each a single FRU.
