IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Hardware Maintenance and Service
The IBM Wheelprinter E 5223 Hardware Maintenance and Service is IBM's service manual for the Wheelprinter E 5223, First Edition (August 1985). The binder spine carries item number 1279888 and form number S544-4079-0, and the reader's comment form at the back gives the order number S544-4079-0. The PDF has 319 pages, including the binder cover, safety section, index and comment form. It is an OCR scan (Adobe Paper Capture), so the text layer is searchable but not reliable for figures; check values against the page image.
The manual describes the 5223 as a letter-quality impact printer for the IBM Personal Computer and compatibles with its parallel interface, printing bidirectionally at 16 characters per second in 10, 12 or 15 pitch or proportional spacing depending on the printwheel, with an optional pinwheel forms feeder and cut-sheet feeder (p. 1-1). The preface says the diagnostic section is meant to be used as a stand-alone document to service the printer.

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]The manual isolates faults to field-replaceable units. There are no schematics and no component values; the power supply, power supply board, printer board and function board are each replaced as a unit. Connector voltages are given for fault isolation, and the only board-level measurements are resistance checks between test pads. Interface and command detail is in the separate Technical Reference (item 1279887).
What it settles
[edit | edit source]The dead machine PIC gives the supply checks. The line cord should read 103 to 127 V ac (3-1600-1). At J6P on the printer board, with the printer switched on (3-1600-5):
| Pin | Signal | Voltage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VRM | Do not measure |
| 2, 4, 7 | GND | 0 V dc |
| 3 | −5 | −4.6 to −5.6 V dc |
| 5 | +5 | 4.6 to 5.6 V dc |
| 6 | +15 | 13.2 to 15.6 V dc |
| 8 | +34 | 27.2 to 46.9 V dc |
The blown fuse PIC (3-1400-1 to 3-1400-5) starts by checking the machine for paper clips, staples and metal shavings. It then isolates the short by disconnecting J6P, then the power supply board, and then measuring the resistance between the +34 V and GND test pads on the printer board: below 15 ohms, it disconnects J2 from the function board and then J5P from the printer board in turn, pointing to the function board, the printer board or the system cable.
The printer self test is run by holding the Stop button while switching on (2-6). It prints the ten function-board setup switch settings as zeros and ones, an eight-digit code giving the software level, and then the characters on the printwheel (2-7).
Chapter 8 lists IBM #23 grease (P/N 1280441, ½ oz; 1280442, 1 lb) and IBM #10 oil (P/N 1280443, 4 oz; 1280444, 1 pt), warns that oil and grease attack the platen, feed rolls, bail rolls, rubber mounts and belts, and says not to lubricate the homing LED area, the printwheel or the transport belt (p. 8-1). It gives lubrication points but no service interval.
