Laserwriter 8.0 Driver 1993

Installing and Using the LaserWriter 8.0 Driver is Apple's 1993 update guide for the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver for the Macintosh. The printed pages run to 38; the scan has 42 pages including the covers.[1] It is a software guide and says nothing about printer hardware.

The guide is meant to be used after the printer's own software has been installed from the printer manual. The LaserWriter 8.0 Install disk holds the driver, PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files, PrintMonitor, Backgrounder, TeachText and the Installer. Apple says the driver can print to any Apple LaserWriter with PostScript except the LaserWriter Select 310, and to other makers' printers that have PPD files. On System 6 the installer replaces PrintMonitor and Backgrounder with versions that may not work with older LaserWriter drivers, so Apple advises keeping copies of the old utilities.[2]

The PostScript error option (p. 22) is set in the Print Options dialog: No Special Reporting, Summarize on Screen, or Print Detailed Report, which makes the printer print a report of the PostScript errors it met.[3] It is a quick way to tell a driver or font problem from a printer fault.

There are no service procedures, parts, schematics, voltages or symptom charts. Printer set-up, consumables, maintenance and troubleshooting are left to the manual that came with each printer.[2]
