Macintosh Programming Secrets 1988

From RetroTechCollection

Macintosh Programming Secrets by Scott Knaster, Addison-Wesley, © 1988 (Library of Congress record dated 1987), ISBN 0-201-06661-0, Library of Congress 87-19374. The scan is 376 pages.

This book was held under two page titles, the other being Macintosh Programming Secrets1988 (no space before the year). That title is now a redirect here. Both pages described the same edition, the same ISBN and the same 376 pages; only the scans differ, and both scans are linked below.

What it covers

[edit | edit source]

Scott Knaster's book of undocumented and half-documented Toolbox behaviour — the companion to his How to Write Macintosh Software.

This is not a repair source

[edit | edit source]

This is a programming book. It contains no schematics, no parts lists, no component values, no voltages, no connector pinouts and no service procedures, and nothing in it should be cited for a hardware figure. Apple's software documentation and its compiler manuals describe the machine as the programmer sees it, which is not the machine the technician sees.

For hardware data use:

level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and module part numbers
  • Apple's Developer Notes — the one class of Apple developer document that does carry
rail currents, expansion-slot power budgets and connector pinouts. Several are held here, for
example Macintosh IIci Developer Note, Macintosh IIsi Developer Note and
Macintosh LC 475 and Quadra 605 Developer Note.

The second scan

[edit | edit source]

The same book is held here twice, as two independent scans of the same edition. The second file is Macintosh_Programming_Secrets1988.pdf (117.3 MB), uploaded under the mis-spelt page title that now redirects here. Neither scan is a different edition; use whichever downloads faster.
