What it settles
[edit | edit source]The FD-3 floppy drive is documented at a level no other Amstrad manual here matches. Pages 3–14 give a full diagnostic flowchart, a diagnosis procedure, parts exchange procedures (printed circuit board, lever frame assembly, stepping motor assembly, and the rest, each with its own figure), and then adjustments and checks — spindle speed adjustment, track sensor adjustment, index burst time adjustment and a resolution check, each with the CE diskette and equipment required. This is a real alignment procedure, not a description of one.
Amstrad's own warning is printed at the head of it: the flowcharts are for information only, and for warranty purposes the drive is an exchange item.
Technical specification (page 2): 512K system unit with all circuitry on a single motherboard; 8 MHz 8086; expandable on the motherboard to 640K; integral colour graphics adaptor with a special 16-colour high-resolution mode; three full-size compatible expansion slots with power available in the standard unit for a hard disc and controller; one or two 360K 5.25-inch floppies, or one floppy with a 10 or 20 MB hard disc; RS232 and parallel interfaces with standard connectors; loudspeaker with volume control; battery-backed real time clock and configuration RAM; socket for an 8087; light pen connector.
The two monitors have their own alignment instructions, and the colour monitor has its own power supply schematic — which matters, because on the PC1512 the power supply is in the monitor.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No hard disc drive service data. Page 25 is installation, not repair.
- No component-level data for the PC-MM's supply equivalent to the PC-CM's.
- No coverage of the PC1640 or the PC2000 series.
- No fault-symptom table for the computer itself — the flowcharts cover the drive only.
