Atari 800XL Service Manual
The Service Manual for the ATARI 800XL Computer is a third-party service manual for the Atari 800XL, published by Electronic Dimensions of San Luis Obispo, California, which also sold a matching manual for the 1050 disk drive. The hosted scan is 41 pages with no text layer. The copyright page carries no date and states that "Atari and 800XL are registered trademarks of Atari, Inc." and that reproduction is prohibited.[1] An Electronic Dimensions advertisement for the "New Edition ATARI 800XL Service Manual", at US$19.50, is bound into the back of the hosted scan of Atari's 400/800 field service manual.[2]
Its text follows Atari's own 800XL Computer Field Service Manual (FD100740 Rev. 01, February 1984) closely, often word for word, and its parts list uses Atari part numbers. Atari's manual is hosted as File:Atari 800XL Computer Field Service Manual FD100740 Rev 01.pdf and should be cited in preference.[3]
Contents
[edit | edit source]Page numbers are the manual's own.
- Section 1, Theory of operation (pp. 5–22): user interface and function keys; mechanical and electrical theory; the 6502C, ANTIC, GTIA, POKEY and PIA with pin assignments; ROMs, DRAMs and the MMU; RF modulator and monitor output levels; the power supply (+5 V DC ±2 %, 1.2 A maximum, 7-pin DIN); the SIO, controller jack, parallel bus, cartridge and keyboard interfaces
- Section 2, Self testing (pp. 23–25): the memory, audio-visual and keyboard tests and all tests
- Section 3, Disassembly/assembly (p. 26)
- Section 4, Troubleshooting (pp. 27–30): a symptom table in the same form as Atari's section 3 checklist
- Section 5, Schematic and parts list (pp. 31–36): the parts list by location, description and Atari part number for the console, the power supply, the RF cable and every position on the board (C1–C112, CR1–CR5, J1–J8, L1–L30, Q1–Q9, resistors, S1, S2, U1–U30 and their sockets, Y1), followed by the domestic/U.K. schematic scanned in four pieces
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- The power supply's internals. The supply appears as a single part, CA024814-001.
- A silkscreen or component location drawing. Atari's own manual has one.
- A revision number, date or service bulletins.
- Coverage of any other machine.
What it adds
[edit | edit source]Its parts list marks unfitted positions "(not used)", including U6, U21, C33, C56, C58–C61, C67, C99–C101, C103, C104, C110 and C111, which Atari's list simply omits.[4] Its electrolytic capacitors agree with Atari's: C1 (470 µF 10 V), C2, C3, C10 and C79 (22 µF 16 V), C19, C20 and C22 (4.7 µF 35 V non-polarised), C24, C50 and C98 (10 µF 16 V) and C49 (47 µF 10 V), twelve in all.[4][3] It lists U4 as the 8K BASIC ROM and U5 as the 16K operating system ROM, matching Atari's schematic; Atari's own parts list prints them the other way round.[4][3]
