IBM PC Server HMM (S30H-2501)

The IBM PC Servers Hardware Maintenance Manual, S30H-2501-01, Second Edition (March 1996). 557 pages.

IBM describes it as a supplement: "This supplement contains diagnostic information, Symptom-to-FRU Indexes, service information, error codes, error messages, and configuration information", and "should be used with the advanced diagnostic tests and the information in the IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Manual (part number 83G8990, form number S52G-9971)". That manual is hosted here — see IBM Personal System 2 Hardware Maintenance Manual (S52G-9971-02, October 1994) — so for once the companion volume is available.

It covers the PC Server 300 (8640), 310 (8639), 320 (8640), 500 (8641), 500 System/390 (8641), 520 (8641) and 720 (8642), plus the SCSI Multi-Storage Enclosure (3517) and the Enterprise Expansion Enclosure (3518).

What it contains

  • PC Server 300, Type 8640 (15) — features, diagnostics and test information, additional service information, Locations for the 486DX2 system board (25) and the Pentium system board (29) separately, the symptom-to-FRU index (32) and the parts listing (47).
  • PC Server 310, Type 8639 (53) — features, diagnostics, additional service information (67), locations (89), a symptom-to-FRU index supplement (95) and parts listings (119).
  • PC Server 320, Type 8640 (127) — features, diagnostics, additional service information, locations (155), symptom-to-FRU index (164) and parts.
  • PC Server 500, Type 8641 (177) — including locations for the system board (208) and parts listing (218).
  • PC Server 500 System/390, Type 8641 (221) — the System/390 variant, with its own locations (241) and parts listing (241).
  • PC Server 520, Type 8641 (243) — with locations given per model group: models EZO, EZV, EZL, EZS and EZE (294) and models MZO, MZV, MZS, MZE and MZL (301).

What it does not contain

Module level only. IBM serviced these machines by field-replaceable-unit exchange, and this pamphlet reflects that: it names FRU part numbers, not component values. There is no capacitor list, no resistor list, no semiconductor list and no schematic anywhere in it. The power supply, the planar and each drive are single line items in the parts catalogue. This is why no IBM machine checked in this wiki's verification drive has a published component-level capacitor list — it is not that the manuals were lost, it is that IBM never wrote one.

What it settles

The PC Server 300 shipped with two entirely different system boards — a 486DX2 board and a Pentium board — and IBM gives them separate location diagrams (pages 25 and 29). Identify the board before using a connector or jumper callout.

The same applies to the PC Server 520, whose locations are split by model group (EZ-series at page 294, MZ-series at 301).
