17" ColorSync Displays Service Source
The 17" ColorSync Displays volume of Apple's Service Source is a 156-page service manual for the AppleVision 750 and AppleVision 750AV 17-inch Trinitron displays, which Apple renamed in November 1997. The body of the manual keeps the AppleVision names; the chapter title pages carry both.[1][2] Its Hot Issues notices are dated December 1997 and March 1998.[3]
The CRT anode runs at about 26 kV. Follow CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside the display. Apple's procedures discharge the CRT before any board is removed and say not to put on a grounding wrist strap until the CRT has been discharged.[4][5] |
| Original name | Name from November 1997 |
|---|---|
| AppleVision 750 Display | 17" (16.1" VIS) ColorSync Display |
| AppleVision 750AV Display | 17" (16.1" VIS) ColorSync AV Display |
Apple states that the name was the only change to the product. VIS is the diagonal viewable image size.[2] The 750AV adds a sound enclosure with stereo speakers and a microphone; otherwise the two models share their features.[6]

The specifications chapter also prints horizontal and vertical timing for each preset resolution and the list of Macintosh models supported by the AppleVision software, which needs a 68040 or later processor and System 7.1 or later.[7] The Apple data sheet bound in after it, dated May 1998 (L02722C), covers both the 17-inch and 20-inch ColorSync Displays and gives different electrical figures: 90-264 V AC, 47-63 Hz and 125 W maximum for the 17-inch model, with order number M6159LL/A.[8] Check the rating plate on the unit.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]The display's setup parameters are stored on the CRT/video board and handled from a Macintosh over ADB with Apple's Display Service Utility (version 4.2.1 at the March 1998 notice). Before the CRT/video board is replaced, fit the jumper from kit 076-0529 to connector BV1, next to the BV2 ribbon cable, and use the utility's Create File to download the parameters to a file named Parameter Settings 750, which takes about three minutes. Back the file up without moving or renaming the original, move the jumper to the new board, and upload the file with Write File. Geometry, convergence and a white-point recalibration (default 9300) follow.[3][9] High voltage can only be adjusted with the Display Service Utility.[10]
Focus, H-Stat and top and bottom convergence are set by hand: H focus and V focus on the flyback transformer with a plastic adjustment tool, H-Stat with a hex tool at the lower left of the CRT/video board, and top and bottom convergence at the back of the CRT/video board.[11]
The high-voltage check needs Apple's high-voltage probe, part 076-0392; Apple says other probes will not read accurately for this procedure. With the display off for at least two minutes, the rear housing off and the probe's ground lead secured to the chassis, the probe goes under the anode cap from the rear of the CRT. At power-on the meter should read 26 V DC, which is 26 kV. A reading of 0 V means the main deflection board.[4] After a main deflection board is replaced, Apple sets the high voltage to 26 kV with the utility's slider and then adjusts focus, at 1024 × 768 first and then in the other two Macintosh modes.[12]
If the utility cannot talk to the display, measure between chassis ground and the end of resistor RL1 (390 Ω) nearest capacitor CP17 on the main deflection board. A reading of 11.5-12.5 V points to the CRT/video board; anything outside that range points to the main deflection board.[13] On the 750AV, the microphone connector inside the bezel, and connector BA10 on the sound board, should read 8 V DC with the microphone unplugged.[14]
Things that are not faults: the two thin horizontal lines across the picture are the support wires of the Trinitron aperture grille; a raster that is not a perfect rectangle is within CRT tolerance; a black screen after a restart is cleared by switching the display off and on and does no permanent damage.[15][14] Jittery video on a Power Macintosh 5500 (serials TY705 to TY715) or 6500 (XB708 to XB718), and blurry video on a 6500 (XB708 to XB723), is a fault in the computer, and the 6500 should not be set above 1152 × 870.[3] Apple notes that many modules returned for repair were fully operational, and asks for a 20-minute warm-up before any adjustment. It also warns against using another AppleVision or ColorSync display as the known-good test monitor.[15]
Since January 1998 the 17-inch ColorSync Display (not the AV model) has used TCO 95 plastics, marked on the rear housing. These parts are replaced like for like: ADB board panel 076-0723, front bezel 922-3335, rear housing 922-3338, bottom housing 922-3343 and blank plate 922-3387.[16] The exploded view gives the other service part numbers, including the CRT/video board (661-1373), main deflection board with chassis (661-1374), intermediate board (922-3138), sound board (922-3158), on-screen display switches board (922-1511), ADB/video cable (922-2023) and power cord (590-0380).[17]
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]There is no schematic, no component values and no fuse rating. Board faults are cured by replacing the main deflection board or the CRT/video board, and Apple notes that CRT/video board replacement was not supported in every country.[9] Apart from the anode voltage, the 12 V reading at RL1 and the 8 V microphone supply, the manual prints no internal voltages.
