What it settles

Technical specification: 80386 at 20 MHz, zero wait states, 32-bit full-width main memory, 80387 socket, 4 MB of parity-checked RAM, a 64K / 35 ns RAM cache, five 16-bit expansion slots, asynchronous bus operation, a 65 MB hard disc option at 1:1 interleave, 1.4 MB floppy drives, connectors for an external 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch drive and a tape streamer, Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA compatible video, a bi-directional parallel printer port, an RS232 serial port, battery-backed clock and configuration RAM, a Microsoft-compatible mouse, a 101/102-key AT keyboard with a security lock, a speaker volume control, built-in LIM 4.0 with a RAM division option between conventional, extended and LIM, and Novell NetWare server compatibility. System unit 415 × 160 × 485 mm; keyboard 475 × 35 × 200 mm.

Amstrad's notes to engineers set the repair policy, and they are unusually blunt:

  • "no component level repairs are to be carried out on Main CPU PCB. After diagnosis test if the fault is confirmed replace CPU PCB."
  • The same applies to the floppy and hard disc drives, and any attempt to repair or replace parts within them invalidates the warranty.
  • "PSU & Monitors are subject to component level repairs."

That last sentence is why this manual includes a power supply chassis schematic diagram but treats the mainboard as an exchange unit. It is also a caution for anyone reading the electrical parts list: Amstrad expected it to be used for the supply and the peripherals, not for board-level repair of the CPU PCB.

Safety test figures: flash test at 1.5 kV RMS for 3 s between mains live/neutral and all accessible exterior metal; insulation resistance at the same voltage showing greater than 4 MΩ; and earth continuity of the mains lead not exceeding 0.5 Ω.

What this manual does not contain

  • No drive service data.
  • No monitor sections — unlike the PC2086 manual, no display is covered here.
  • No fault-symptom table or diagnostic flowchart.
  • No text layer, so nothing can be searched.
