Apple Hard Disk 20 Owner's Guide
Macintosh Hard Disk 20 is Apple's 1985 owner's guide for the Apple Hard Disk 20, scanned as a 60-page PDF. The scan opens with Apple's separate "Macintosh Update: Hard Disk 20" sheet (PDF pp. 1-7), which adds notes for owners with a Macintosh Plus or a LaserWriter. The guide describes the Hard Disk 20 Startup disk's System file as dated 1 September 1985.[1]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Placement: put the HD20 under the Macintosh, and keep its side vents clear. If it goes beside the Macintosh, put it on the right; on the left it risks magnetic interference from the Macintosh's power supply and video circuitry (p. 2, PDF p. 13).
- Operating environment: 50 to 104 °F and 20 to 80 % relative humidity; keep liquids, solvent fumes and steam away from it (p. 38, PDF p. 45).
- Troubleshooting for owners: a missing HD20 icon usually means the Macintosh was switched on before the HD20; a damaged System file on the HD20 is replaced from the Startup disk (pp. 39-40, PDF pp. 46-47).
- Hard Disk 20 Test, on the Startup disk, takes about 15 minutes and tests the hard disk on the Disk Drive port. Apple suggests running it every month or so; it tests hardware only (pp. 40-41, PDF pp. 47-48).
- The specifications match Apple's Tech Info Library article 1306: 20,769,280 bytes formatted, 39,040 blocks of 532 bytes, 85-270 V AC, 30 W, 3.2 kg (p. 44, PDF p. 50).
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is an owner's guide. It warns owners not to remove the cover because the unit holds high-voltage components that keep their charge after switch-off (p. 39, PDF p. 46), and it has no take-apart procedure, parts list, schematic or component values. For those, see Apple Hard Disk 20 Technical Procedures and Apple Hard Disk 20 Service Source.
