Service Source

[edit | edit source]

The LaserWriter 12/640 PS volume of Apple's Service Source is a 242-page service manual. The PDF was produced on 13 April 1996 (FrameMaker 5.0.1, Acrobat Distiller 2.1).[1] Its overview chapter was written for technicians who knew the earlier LaserWriters and lists what is new in this one.[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The engine is a Fuji Xerox P893 with a 780 nm, 5 mW laser; the controller an AMD Am29040 at 30 MHz with 4 MB of ROM and 4 MB of RAM expandable to 64 MB.[3] The REA document names the capacitor Apple had removed (C102) and the replacement DC controller board without it (661-1441).[4]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic and there are no component values. The exploded views give part numbers, but the text layer of those pages is jumbled, so read them from the images. The manual refers to animations and a separate "Multipurpose Tray Paper Jams" PDF on the Service Source CD, which are not included.[5]

User's manual

[edit | edit source]

The user's manual (Apple part number 034-0211-A, from the PDF's title field) covers set-up, software for Mac OS, Windows and UNIX, paper, the options, maintenance, troubleshooting and technical information, in 354 pages. This copy starts at chapter 1 and has no cover, title page or contents.[6] Its maintenance chapter gives the toner cartridge life (about 6,000 pages), the service interval (120,000 pages) and the fixing roller temperature (about 400 °F, 204 °C).[7]
