Apple LaserWriter 8500 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Apple's service manual, user's guide and sales literature for the Apple LaserWriter 8500.

Service Source

[edit | edit source]

The LaserWriter 8500 volume of Apple's Service Source is a 282-page service manual. Its table of contents is dated August 1997, and the PDF was produced on 28 July 1997 (FrameMaker 5.1.1, Acrobat Distiller 2.1).[1] Its overview was written for technicians who knew the earlier LaserWriters and covers what is different about this one.[2]

Contents

[edit | edit source]
  • Overview (PDF pp. 3-19): duplexer, offset function, sheet feeder, form factor, paper orientation, service test page, RAM, full-stack sensor, point-of-sale mode, voltage-specific parts, density adjustment
  • Basics (PDF pp. 21-36): function of the main components (cassette, feed, transport, fusing, drive, top cover and xerographics, electrical) and the sensing system locator
  • Specifications (PDF pp. 38-53): engine, controller, ports, imaging, life, paper, dimensions, environment, power
  • Take Apart (PDF pp. 55-245): about 75 procedures for the printer, sheet feeder and duplexer, with a contents list on PDF p. 245
  • Troubleshooting (PDF pp. 247-278): status panel, POST, PostScript reporting, EPOST and its codes, flowcharts 1 to 8, and image defects 1 to 14
  • Exploded View (PDF pp. 280-282): three views with part numbers, including the duplexer and sheet feeder

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The engine is a Fuji Xerox P880 with a 780 nm, 5 mW laser diode, and the controller an AMD Am29040 at 30/60 MHz with an 80C186 I/O processor, 8 MB of ROM and 16 MB of RAM on the board.[3] The exploded views give part numbers for the voltage-specific parts, for example the fuser assembly (661-1418 for 110 V, 661-1423 for 220 V) and the power supply (922-3031 and 922-3032).[4]

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic and there are no component values. The manual has no procedure for changing the toner cartridge, which is in the user's guide. It refers to Apple Technical Information Library article 24286 on ghosting with new toner cartridges, which is not included.[5] Its weight figure of about 30 lb (14 kg) disagrees with Apple's other documents; see Apple LaserWriter 8500#Specifications.

User's guide

[edit | edit source]

The user's guide (Apple part number 034-0210-A, from the PDF's title field) runs to 300 pages. This copy starts at chapter 1 and has no cover, title page or contents.[6]

  • Chapter 1 (PDF pp. 1-28): setting up, safety, toner cartridge, paper, connecting and turning on
  • Chapters 2 to 4 (PDF pp. 29-108): setting up for Mac OS, for Windows, DOS and NetWare, and for UNIX and TCP/IP
  • Chapter 5 (PDF pp. 109-124): installing the duplexer, feeders and memory
  • Chapters 6 to 9 (PDF pp. 125-187): printing from Mac OS, Windows 3.1 and DOS, Windows 95 and NT, and printing envelopes
  • Chapter 10 (PDF pp. 189-190): maintenance
  • Chapters 11 and 12 (PDF pp. 193-216): fixing paper, image and other problems
  • Appendixes A to D (PDF pp. 219-274): the printer utilities, ATPS remote printing, demonstration pages and technical information, including RAM specifications, ozone emission and part numbers

The maintenance chapter gives the toner cartridge life (about 14,000 pages), the service interval (200,000 pages), the fixing roller temperature (about 400 °F, 200 °C) and a cooling time of about 40 minutes.[7]

Sales literature

[edit | edit source]
  • The data sheet (L02389A, June 1997) has the order numbers for the printer and its options and adds specifications not in the Service Source: duty cycle, engine life, ledger and A3 speed, and a SCSI port.[8]
  • The four-page New Product Overview (July 1997) is a dealer briefing with positioning, a comparison with the HP LaserJet 4MV and Lexmark Optra N, part numbers and questions and answers. The copy is a scan of a fax print.[9]
