Apple MessagePad 2000 Q EVT2 Schematic
The Apple MessagePad 2000 Q EVT2 Schematic is Apple Computer's 12-sheet schematic for the EVT2 build of "Q", the prototype of the MessagePad 2000. Sheet 1 carries the title "Q, EVT2 Schematic - V2.1", drawing number AP2375-10, revision 2.1; the other sheets carry drawing number "Q", revision A. Every sheet is marked "Notice of proprietary property".[1] The Newton FAQ notes that the second round of MessagePad 2000 EVT units used the StrongARM processor that went into production.[2]

[edit | edit source]Sheets read for the pages that cite this drawing:[1]
- Sheet 1: the Milton ASIC (U9), JTAG test points, reset switch S1, the 32.768 kHz crystal Y2, voltage detectors U2 and U4, and the backup capacitor C88 (0.1 F 2.5 V)
- Sheet 3: the Keynes audio and tablet ASIC (U6), speaker connector J4, microphone connector J5, battery temperature thermistor input, and calibration notes for the A/D converter
- Sheet 4: the docking connector (InterConnect, J1), the LTC1323 serial driver (U7), the internal modem connector J6, the infrared transceiver (U1) and power switch connector J7
- Sheet 9: PC Card power switches U29 and U30 (SI9712CY), the backlight inverter (Q7, Q4, transformer T1) and EL connector J13
- Sheet 10: the adapter input J2 with filter L2, transient suppressor D2 (TPSMB10) and 2 A fuse F1, the battery contacts J14, current sensor U36 (MAX471), the fast-charge circuit, and the NiCd and temperature sense pads J15 and J16
- Sheet 11: the power supplies: U40 (MAX1651, +3.3 V), U32 (MAX1771, +19 to +30 V), U38 (MAX1771, +12 V) and U34 (MAX1771, +5 V)
The remaining sheets carry the processor bus, memory, LCD and PC Card slot wiring.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Values for the polarised capacitors listed on the Apple Newton MessagePad Capacitor Replacement Guide.
- The four converters in the power supply, and the position of U34 and C147, which owners report failing on production boards (Apple Newton MessagePad Troubleshooting Guide).
- Connector designators J4, J5, J7 and J13, which match those used in community disassembly guides for production units.
What this drawing does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is a pre-production drawing. It has no bill of materials, no board layout and no tolerances, and it does not say whether each capacitor is tantalum or aluminium. Production MessagePad 2000 and 2100 boards may differ: a resistor that Frank Gründel reports on production boards (R120) does not appear on the power supply sheet.[1]
