[edit | edit source]

The Silentype Printer Operation and Reference Manual is Apple's owner's manual for the Silentype, product number 030-0095-00, copyright 1980. The scan has 68 pages, and printed page numbers are five less than the PDF page.[1]

Contents, from the manual's own list:[1]

  • Introduction
  • Chapter 1, Getting Ready: what you will need (3), checking the paper (3), plugging in the interface (4)
  • Chapter 2, Beginning to Print: starting up, printing with Pascal, Pascal graphics, BASIC, the Monitor, echoing to the screen, tabs, the buffer, silent typing, printing BASIC graphics (9-17)
  • Chapter 3, Getting Fancy: Pascal and BASIC control of form feed, line spacing, direction, print intensity, margins, graphics, negative and inverse printing, high-resolution page 2 (20-40)
  • Appendix A, Caring for the Printer: replacing the paper (43), diagnostic error message (44)
  • Appendix B, Tables: parameter table (45), control functions (46)

It settles the printer's speed (up to 40 characters per second), its power source (the Apple II, through the interface card), the slot and C800 ROM rules for the interface card, and the paper handling.[1] It has no specifications for the mechanism and no service information.

Silentype Printer Technical Procedures

The Silentype Printer Technical Procedures is Apple's service procedure for the printer, 28 pages, copyright 1985, with sections revised between September 1982 and April 1986. This copy was extracted from Apple's Apple II/Apple III Archived Products, Volume Two binder (part number 072-0231).[2] Section pages map to the PDF as follows: section 1 page 1.n is PDF page n + 1.

Contents:[2]

  • Section 1, Take-Apart (rev. Sep 82, PDF pp. 2-12): removing the cover and base (1.3), replacing the head cable (1.5), the print head (1.7), the drive string (1.9) and the deserializer card (1.11)
  • Section 2, Alignment Procedures (PDF pp. 13-14)
  • Section 3, Diagnostics (PDF pp. 15-18): aligning the printer mechanism, other tests
  • Section 4, Troubleshooting (rev. Feb 86, PDF p. 19): troubleshooting chart

  • Section 6, Illustrated Parts List (rev. Apr 86, PDF pp. 24-28): printer and interface card ICs

What it does not contain: no schematic, no voltages and no component values for the deserializer card; the parts list covers the mechanism and the interface card's integrated circuits only. It refers to Apple Service Bulletin #39 and the Multi-Product Diagnostics Technical Procedures, which are not part of this file.[2]
