Archimedes 300 Series Service Manual
The Archimedes 300 Series Module Level Service Manual (Acorn part number 0476,140, Issue 1, April 1988) is Acorn's dealer service manual for the A305 and A310. It is the primary source for those two machines' published specification.
What it contains
[edit | edit source]- Technical specification — RAM and ROM fitment (16 off 64K×4 DRAM standard, a further 16 as the A305 upgrade; four 32-pin ROM sockets), the 24 MHz master clock, mains and podule power ratings, case and keyboard dimensions, environmental limits, and the internal backup battery type.
- System description — the ARM/MEMC/VIDC/IOC chip set and the Arthur screen-mode table (modes 0–20).
- Disassembly and assembly of the main unit and keyboard.
- Upgrading — backplane and fan, Econet module, podule installation, the 0.5 MB RAM upgrade, second floppy drive, hard disc upgrade, MIDI module and Arthur ROM fitting instructions.
- Connectors, interfaces, links and test points, including the PL5–PL8 power-rail tags and the analogue RGB and mono video signal levels.
- Fault-finding flowcharts for no display, no sound and dead machines.
- Appendices — dealer-serviceable parts list with Acorn part numbers, Acorn's production and field change notices (including field change orders E008, E009 and E011), a serial-port application note, the functional test instructions, the function map, plugs and sockets, links and test points, main PCB component layout, assembly drawings and the circuit diagrams.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]It is a module level manual: it tells a dealer which module to replace, not which component. It carries no per-designator resistor or capacitor values — those are in the separate Archimedes 300 Series Service Manual Component Level Supplement. It does not document the power supply unit internally; Acorn treated the PSU as a service-replacement item and published no PSU schematic or parts list for the 300 series. It predates RISC OS, so the operating system it describes is Arthur.
