Envelope Feeder Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Envelope Feeder volume of Apple's Service Source is Apple's 50-page service manual for the envelope feeders of the LaserWriter Pro 600/630 and LaserWriter 16/600 PS laser printers. It covers only Take Apart, Additional Procedures and Adjustments for the feeder; Apple refers to the main printer manuals for everything else.[1]

Two feeders

[edit | edit source]

The LaserWriter Pro 600/630 envelope feeder works only with the Pro 600/630. The LaserWriter 16/600 PS envelope feeder works with either printer. Apple gives three ways to tell them apart (pp. 4–5):[1]

Identifying the envelope feeders[1]
Check Pro 600/630 feeder 16/600 PS feeder
Pickup rollers and shafts Two-piece roller and shaft One-piece roller and shaft
Vendor number on the end of the controller board RG5-0576 RG1-3437

Notes from the manual

[edit | edit source]
  • Slip torque rollers and gears are ratcheted, torque-limiting parts that use bearings instead of teeth. The primary feed roller turns independently of its shaft in reverse, so jams can be pulled out; the separation drive's one passive gear and two slip torque gears make the separation rollers counter-rotate whichever way the gear train is driven; and the two pickup roller shaft gears that mesh with the transfer drive are slip torque gears. A roller that turns freely one way is therefore not necessarily faulty.[1]
  • Separation guide opening: if the separation guide plate has been removed from the front cover, loosen its screw, put a 1 mm and a 0.5 mm thickness gauge together (1.5 mm) between the plate and the primary feed roller, and tighten the screw (pp. 49–50).[1]
  • Cable receptacles are held by finned expansion post connectors that can be hard to remove; Apple suggests fingers, small bent-nose pliers, grip rings forced round the post, or a 5 mm nut driver (pp. 46–47).[1]
