Game Boy Advance Service Manual

The Game Boy Advance Service Manual is Nintendo's authorised service documentation for the Game Boy Advance (AGB), written for Nintendo's service network in Brazil and translated into English by the community. It is 21 pages, and it is the only English-language GBA service manual known to exist.

What it is

Nintendo distributed GBA service manuals in Portuguese to authorised service centres in Brazil. No official English-language edition is known. The copy hosted here is a translation (v2) made by Reddit user nintencore, who re-set the English text to follow the layout of the official Brazilian source document. The manual states its own scope: the procedures "apply to Game Boy Advance devices produced in Brazil, but also serve products produced in North America."

The translation is a community document; the content behind it is Nintendo's. Where a figure from this manual is used on this wiki, it is worth remembering that it has passed through a translation step.

What it contains

Theory of operation — power, CPU, system timer, display, audio, controls, cartridge interface.
A per-rail operating voltage table, separately for GBA mode and GBC mode, covering the CPU, CPU peripheral circuits, sound amplifier, regulator, external WRAM, expansion connector, LCD and cartridge. This is the most useful single page in the manual for anyone probing a dead GBA.
Battery thresholds: the bicolour LED turns red below 2.35 V, and the console shuts down below 1.7 V.
Clocks: a 4.194 MHz master clock, multiplied by four for GBA mode (16.776 MHz) and by two for GB/GBC mode (8.388 MHz).

General precautions and disassembly and reassembly procedures, including the warning that the longer Y-type security screws must not be fitted into the battery compartment hole, where they will damage the front case.

What it does not contain

No component-level parts list with capacitor or resistor values. It is a test-and-replace manual, not a component-level repair manual.
No board revision table. There is no discussion of AGB mainboard revisions.
Nothing about the Game Boy Advance SP or the Game Boy Micro. It covers the original AGB only.
No fault-code or diagnostic table of the kind Nintendo printed for the NES and Super NES — fault-finding here is the test cartridge, not a symptom table.
The test cartridges it depends on are service items that were never sold. Several of its procedures cannot be followed without one.
