Two corrections to this page's title. It is an IBM Redbook, not a service manual; and it covers four machines, not two — the Model 90 XP 486, the Model 95 XP 486, the Model 55 LS and the Model P75 486, all announced in the fourth quarter of 1990.
What it contains
[edit | edit source]- 1.0 Introduction and 2.0 Product Positioning — where each of the four machines sits, including the Model 55 LS (2.2) and the P75 486 (2.3).
- 3.0 General System Description — system overviews and the model lists for the 90 XP 486 and 95 XP 486.
- 4.0 System Details and Planar Functions — physical specifications for each machine, operating system support and total system memory, Micro Channel slot layout (4.4), battery and CMOS RAM (4.5), keyboard and mouse ports, security including SCSI security (4.7), and power supply (4.8) with a section for the 8590.
- New features and options announced with the machines.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]No FRU numbers, no removal procedures, no symptom-to-FRU index, no schematics and no component values. For those, use the model technical references and the hardware maintenance pamphlets.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]Section 4.5, battery and CMOS RAM, is the part a repairer wants: it is IBM's own description of how the 90/95 keep configuration, which is the starting point for a machine that forgets its settings. Section 4.4, the Micro Channel slot layout, settles which slots on these planars carry which extensions — the thing that decides whether a given adapter will work in a given slot.
