IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 X32 Hardware Maintenance Manual

From RetroTechCollection

The ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual of July 2005 is the hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad X30, X31 and X32, part number 39T6189, First Edition (July 2005). The PDF has 196 pages: four front pages, 190 numbered pages and the back cover, which carries the part number.

The title page lists the products supported: ThinkPad X30, X31 and X32 (machine types 2672, 2673, 2884 and 2885), ThinkPad Dock (machine type 2631) and ThinkPad Dock II (machine type 2877). The edition notice reads "© Copyright Lenovo 2005. Portions © Copyright International Business Machines Corporation 2005", and the service policy text refers to Lenovo and Lenovo authorised servicers, so this is a Lenovo publication for IBM-branded machines.

Unlike the January 2003 X30/X31 manual, this edition has no model matrix. It directs the servicer to IBM's PC Entitlement Warehouse, eSupport and the manual's own FRU lists to identify parts for a given machine (pp. 5-7).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

The manual works at FRU level. There are no schematics, no board layouts and no component values, and the system board is a single part number per processor option. The only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide (p. 23).

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The power system checkout (pp. 44-46) gives these limits:

Power system checkout, ThinkPad X30, X31 and X32 (pp. 44-46)
Item Measured at Correct reading
AC adapter Pin 1 to pin 2 (ground) of the adapter plug +15.5 to +17.0 V dc
Battery pack Terminal 1 (+) to terminal 5 (−) +0 to +12.6 V dc; discharged if below +11.0 V
Battery pack, above +11.0 V Resistance between terminals 4 and 5 4 to 30 kΩ
Backup battery Red wire (+) to black wire +2.5 to +3.2 V dc

The password section (pp. 32-36) keeps IBM's policy. A forgotten power-on password can be removed with the supervisor password, or, where no supervisor password is set, by removing the backup battery. A forgotten supervisor password has no reset procedure and the system board must be replaced. A forgotten user hard-disk password can be bypassed only with the master hard-disk password; without it neither Lenovo nor its authorised servicers will reset it or recover data.

The screw kit, P/N 27L6751, holds the nylon-coated screws listed by size (M2 x 3 mm to M2 x 14 mm, M2.5 and M3) with the quantity of each (p. 181). After a system board replacement the serial number must be written back with the ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Diskette version 1.71 or later (p. 72).

For an X30 or X31 the IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 Service Manual (January 2003, 92P1288) covers the same machines; it does not cover the X32 or machine types 2884 and 2885.
