Improved Power Macintosh Computers Developer Note

From RetroTechCollection

Improved Power Macintosh Computers is Apple Computer's developer note dated 4/23/96 (Developer Press, © Apple Computer, Inc. 1996), 14 PDF pages. It is a delta guide: it lists only what changed in the Power Macintosh 7200/100, 7200/120, 7600/120, 8500/132, 8500/150 and 9500/150 against the earlier models, and refers back to the full developer notes for everything else.

[edit | edit source]

With printed page numbers, all in Chapter 1, Delta Guide:

  • Summary of new features (p. 2)
  • Processor types and speeds (p. 2), Table 1-1
  • Second-level cache, hard disk sizes, Macintosh System 7.5.3, configurations (p. 3)
  • Compatibility and machine identification (p. 4)
  • RAM DIMM dimensions (p. 5)

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Processor and bus speeds of each model (Table 1-1, p. 3): 7200/100 at 100 MHz on a 50 MHz bus; 7200/120 and 7600/120 at 120 MHz on 40 MHz; 8500/132 at 132 MHz on 44 MHz; 8500/150 and 9500/150 at 150 MHz on 50 MHz.
  • The improved 7500 is named the 7600 because its processor changed to a PowerPC 604 (p. 2).
  • The note lists a 7200/100 that Apple's 7200 Service Source does not; Power Macintosh 7200 records the difference.
