LaserWriter 16/600 PS Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The LaserWriter 16/600 PS volume of Apple's Service Source is a 316-page service manual for the Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS. The PDF was made on 26 October 1995.[1] It follows the layout of the LaserWriter Pro 600/630 Service Source, whose case and much of whose engine design the 16/600 PS shares. Its opening page lists what changed: a new rear housing in which the I/O controller is easier and the DC controller harder to reach, new I/O connectivity procedures, fax card and internal hard disk options, a faster engine whose modules and feeders are not interchangeable with the Pro 600/630, two extra fans, new printer utilities and a new diagnostic.[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The engine is a Canon LBP-P430 printing 17.1 pages per minute on letter and 16.2 on A4 at 600 dpi. The I/O board has an AMD 29030 RISC processor at 25 MHz, 8 MB of RAM expandable to 32 MB and 4 MB of ROM, soldered or on SIMMs.[3]

The extended power-on self test is started with a mini DIN-8 loopback connector (part 922-1489, or a plug with pins 1 and 2 joined) in the serial port and the configuration switch up. It shows twelve four-light codes, from the I/O controller board and RAM SIMMs to the fuser, fans, main motor and a failing SCSI disk.[4]

After a fusing failure the DC controller charges C208 and the printer stays in error for about 10 minutes, or until C208 is discharged by hand.[5]

Only five RAM configurations work (8, 12, 16, 24 and 32 MB); 12 MB is the minimum for PhotoGrade; 16 MB SIMMs must use 2K refresh.[6]

The troubleshooting tables are the same as those in the Pro 600/630 Service Source apart from the capacitor (C208 instead of C202) and the fan table, which covers three fans.[1]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no schematic and there are no component values. The board diagrams locate connectors and a few named parts (C208, VR201), and the wiring diagram shows connections between assemblies. It refers to separate envelope feeder and sheet feeder manuals and to a "New Servicing Issues" document on the Service Source CD, which are not part of this PDF.[2][1]
