Macintosh Processor Upgrade Service Source
Appearance
The Macintosh Processor Upgrade volume of Apple's Service Source is Apple's 11-page service manual for the Macintosh Processor Upgrade, a PowerPC 601 card for Macintosh models built around the 68LC040. The PDF was created on 2 November 1995 for the Service Source CD.
Apple lists these machines as able to take the upgrade: Macintosh Quadra 605; Macintosh LC 475, 575 and 630; Performa 475/476, 575/577/578 and 630/630CD/635CD/636/638CD (Basics p. 1). The card carries the PowerPC 601 and a socket for the machine's own 68LC040, so the owner can switch between the two processors.[1]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Requirements and specifications: system software 7.5 or later; PowerPC 601; the host must have at least 8 MB of RAM; 4 MB of ROM on the card; 256K of cache, upgradeable to 1 MB; operating temperature 10-40 °C.
- Symptom chart for a machine that will not start with the card fitted: reseat the card, confirm at least 8 MB of RAM, then replace the card.
- The card is switched on or off in a control panel. After switching it on, choose Shut Down, not Restart, or the machine starts with the card still off; Apple also says to wait 10 seconds before switching back on when turning the card off for an older application.
- A PRAM reset turns the card off; turn it back on afterwards and reset the date, time, monitors and file sharing.

- No clock speed for the 601.
- No schematics or component data.
