The Macintosh Quadra 610 is a personal computer designed and manufactured by Apple Computer, released on October 21, 1993.[1] It replaced the Macintosh Centris 610 when Apple consolidated its confusing product naming into fewer lines.[2]

The Quadra 610 uses the same low-profile "pizza box" case as the Centris 610. The primary upgrade was a faster full 68040 processor at 25 MHz with an integrated FPU, replacing the 20 MHz 68LC040 that lacked floating-point capabilities.[3]

Model Variants

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 610 was sold in several configurations:[4]

  • Quadra 610 8/160 (M2372LL/A): 8 MB RAM, 160 MB HDD โ€” US$1,440 (U.S. model shipped with 68LC040)
  • Quadra 610 8/230 (M2099LL/A): 8 MB RAM, 230 MB HDD, 2ร— CD-ROM โ€” US$1,650
  • Quadra 610 DOS Compatible (M2322LL/A): Included Intel 486SX @ 25 MHz card โ€” US$2,100

The base 8/160 model sold in the United States retained the 68LC040 processor from the Centris 610. All other configurations shipped with the full 68040 including integrated FPU.

A server variant, the Workgroup Server 60, shared the same case and logic board design.

Architecture and Processor

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 610 uses a Motorola 68040 processor running at 25 MHz. The full 68040 includes an integrated floating-point unit (FPU), distinguishing it from the 68LC040 used in the Macintosh Centris 610.[5]

  • CPU: Motorola 68040 @ 25 MHz (or 68LC040 on U.S. 8/160 model)
  • FPU: Integrated (on full 68040)
  • Data bus: 32-bit
  • Address bus: 32-bit
  • L1 cache: 8 KB (4 KB data + 4 KB instruction)
  • ROM: 1 MB
  • System bus: 25 MHz

Memory

[edit | edit source]
  • Onboard RAM: 4 MB soldered to logic board
  • RAM slots: 2 ร— 72-pin SIMM
  • Standard RAM: 8 MB (4 MB onboard + 4 MB SIMM)
  • Maximum RAM: 68 MB (4 MB onboard + 2 ร— 32 MB SIMMs)
  • RAM speed: 80 ns or faster
  • Supported SIMMs: 4, 8, 16, or 32 MB

If SIMMs of different speeds are used, the faster SIMM should be installed in bank 0 (frontmost slot).

Storage

[edit | edit source]
  • Floppy drive: 1.44 MB SuperDrive (auto-inject)
  • Hard drive: 160 or 230 MB internal SCSI
  • CD-ROM: Optional 2ร— AppleCD 300i (internal)
  • SCSI interface: External DB-25 connector

Display and Graphics

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 610 includes built-in video output via a DB-15 connector.

  • VRAM: 512 KB standard, expandable to 1 MB
  • VRAM slots: 2 (accepts 256 KB or 512 KB VRAM SIMMs)
  • VRAM speed: 100 ns
Display Resolutions

Audio

[edit | edit source]
  • Output: Mono 8-bit (mini jack)
  • Input: Stereo 8-bit (mini jack)
  • Speaker: Internal mono speaker
  • Microphone: Included with some configurations

Input/Output and Expansion

[edit | edit source]

Port Configuration

[edit | edit source]
  • ADB ports: 2 (keyboard, mouse)
  • Serial ports: 2 (DIN-8 printer and modem)
  • SCSI: 1 (DB-25 external)
  • Video: 1 (DB-15)
  • Audio out: Mini jack (mono)
  • Audio in: Mini jack (stereo)
  • Ethernet: AAUI-15

Expansion Slots

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 610 has a single Processor Direct Slot (PDS). A NuBus adapter (Apple part M1402LL/A) allows installation of one 7-inch NuBus card. Standard 12-inch NuBus cards will not fit due to case constraints.[6]

The low-profile case requires the use of a heatsink on the 68040 processor. Third-party L2 cache cards were available for the PDS slot.

Power

[edit | edit source]
  • Power input: 100โ€“240V AC, 50โ€“60 Hz
  • Max power consumption: 210 watts
  • PRAM battery: 3.6V lithium half-AA

Upgrade Paths

[edit | edit source]

The Quadra 610's PDS slot accepts PowerPC upgrade cards:[7]

  • Apple Power Mac PDS Card: Upgrades to PowerPC 601
  • DayStar PowerPro 601: 50 MHz PowerPC 601 with 1 MB L2 cache
  • Sonnet QuadDoubler: 50 MHz 68040
  • Sonnet Presto PPC: 100 MHz PowerPC 601

The case can also be modified to accept Power Macintosh 6100 components, as both systems share the same chassis design.

Known Issues

[edit | edit source]
  • Heat management: The pizza box case has limited airflow. Hard drive or accelerator overheating may occur. Removing the rear insert or replacing the power supply fan can improve cooling.[8]
  • Serial throughput: Serial ports are limited to 57.6 kbps, which may restrict 56k modem performance.
  • Fan filter: The fan filter is inside the power supply. Cleaning accumulated dust can resolve apparent power supply failures.

General Maintenance

[edit | edit source]

For detailed maintenance practices including cleaning, PRAM battery management, connector corrosion prevention, and voltage adjustments, refer to the dedicated Macintosh Centris 610 General Maintenance page. The Quadra 610 uses the same logic board and case as the Centris 610.

Capacitor Replacement Guide

[edit | edit source]

Detailed capacitor replacement guidelines for the logic board can be found on the Macintosh Centris 610 Capacitor Replacement Guide page.

Troubleshooting

[edit | edit source]

A comprehensive troubleshooting guide addressing no power, chime but no video, intermittent operation, and other issues is available on the Macintosh Centris 610 Troubleshooting page.
