Macintosh Quadra 800/WS 80 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh Quadra 800/WS 80 Service Source is Apple's 81-page service manual for the Macintosh Quadra 800 and the Workgroup Server 80. The PDF was distilled from FrameMaker files on 22 November 1995 and is not a scan; its title page carries no Apple part number or revision.

Like other Service Source volumes it works at module level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and upgrade procedures, battery procedures and an exploded view with module part numbers.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Specifications: 33 MHz 68040 with PMMU, FPU and 8K cache; 8 MB soldered DRAM or 24 MB standard, expandable to 136 MB in 72-pin 60 ns SIMMs; 1 MB ROM; 512K or 1 MB VRAM in two slots forming one bank; 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz, 200 W continuous; 14.25 × 7.75 × 16 in, 24 lb (pp. 3-13). The metric weight is printed as 11.3 kg, which does not match 24 lb (10.9 kg).
  • Battery: measure with the cover and logic board removed and replace below 3.2 V (pp. 75-76).
  • Error chords: a one-part chord points first to the hard drive and floppy drive, a two-part chord to the SIMMs (p. 16).
  • The LED cable must be reconnected after the logic board has been out; the chart for the "This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model" message starts with it (pp. 19, 46).
  • An internal CD-300 is jumpered to SCSI ID 3 (p. 64).
  • Exploded view part numbers include logic board 661-1676, power supply 661-1687, CD-ROM drive 661-0913, floppy drive 661-0121, tape drive 661-0795, power supply cable 922-0837, SCSI cable 922-0839 and LED cable 922-0841 (p. 81).

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No Basics chapter; the volume opens at Specifications.
  • No schematic, board-level parts list or component values. The exploded view gives module and mechanical part numbers only, and refers to a separate parts list for the parts marked with an asterisk (hard drive, front panel).
  • No voltage-adjustment procedure and no rail tolerance table.
  • The symptom charts refer to a "SIMMs verification" procedure that is not in this volume.

The companion hardware description is Macintosh Centris 610 Centris 650 and Quadra 800 Developer Note, which gives the power budgets, SCSI termination rules and expansion-slot details that this manual lacks.
