The PDP-11/70 is the largest of Digital Equipment Corporation's PDP-11 minicomputers, introduced in March 1975.[1] It takes the processor of the PDP-11/45 and adds a 2 KB cache, 22-bit physical addressing for up to 4 MB of memory on its own main memory bus, a Unibus map so that Unibus devices can reach all of that memory, and up to four RH70 Massbus controllers connecting fast disks and tapes directly to memory.[1][2] Early machines have the KB11-B processor and later ones the KB11-C; the difference is the floating-point option they take (FP11-B or FP11-C).[1][3]

A basic 11/70 is a double cabinet: the processor cabinet, with the CPU mounting box and two H7420 power supplies, and a memory cabinet with MJ11 core or MK11 MOS memory, each cabinet with its own 861 power control on a three-phase supply.[3][4] The processor cabinet alone holds up to eight H744 regulators and two 5411086 regulator boards, each set and checked at the processor backplane against DEC's tables.[4] See PDP-11/70 Power Supply Service, PDP-11/70 General Maintenance and PDP-11/70 Troubleshooting Guide.

Power

[edit | edit source]

The processor cabinet's 861 power control feeds the upper and lower H7420 supplies on separate phases. Each H7420 carries up to five H744 +5 V regulators and a 5411086 regulator board: the upper one makes +8 V and +15 V and the line clock signal, the lower one −15 V, and both monitor their supply for AC LO and DC LO.[4] The memory cabinet has its own 861 and a power supply in each memory frame.[4] Specifications and adjustments are on PDP-11/70 Power Supply Service.
