Performa 6200/6300 Series Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Performa 6200/6300 Series volume of Apple's Service Source is a 210-page service manual for the Performa 6200, 6205CD, 6214CD, 6216CD, 6218CD, 6220CD, 6230CD, 6290, 6300CD, 6320, 6320CD and 6360, desktop machines built around the PowerPC 603 and 603e. It prints no revision date, and the PDF's internal creation date (2 September 1956) is wrong. The last two pages reproduce Apple Tech Info Library article 22102, the Read Me for the 1.2 GB Firmware Utility 1.1, which updates some 1.2 GB ATA drives that give an intermittent flashing question mark at startup.

Like other Service Source volumes, it works at module level: a Basics chapter describing the family, specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures, upgrades, battery and reset procedures, Apple's repair extension procedures, and an exploded view.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Apple's repair extension procedures cover system freezes and sudden changes in video colour hue on the Performa 62xx and 63xx, except the 6320 and 6360. For a freezing machine: replace the logic board if the clock chip at U10 is not 343S1191 or 343S1121; replace the Cache/ROM DIMM if it matches Apple's illustration and has no sticker on the middle IC; fit a hooked card fence to an Ethernet card; replace the EMI clips if the logic board is not being replaced. Apple attributes freezes due to Type 11 errors to software (REA Procedures pp. 2–5, PDF pp. 175–178).
  • The same U10 check appears in the "System intermittently crashes or hangs" symptom chart (PDF p. 47).
  • The Performa 6360 differs from the rest of the family: 160 MHz 603e, DIMMs, a PCI slot instead of the LC PDS, GeoPort serial ports and a different power supply (Basics p. 5; Electrical).
