PowerBook 100 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Apple documents for the PowerBook 100 besides the PowerBook 100 Service Source: the developer note and a pre-production logic board schematic.

Developer note

[edit | edit source]

Macintosh PowerBook 100 Developer Note, Apple Developer Technical Publications, 1991, 58 PDF pages with a text layer. Chapter 1 describes the hardware: the features list (68HC000 at 15.667 MHz, 256 KB ROM and 2 MB PSRAM soldered to the secondary logic board, 70-pin RAM connector, FSTN display, 2.5 Ah sealed lead-acid battery and three lithium backup batteries), the block diagram, memory, the Power Manager, the AC adapter, the I/O connector pinouts (HDI-20 floppy, HDI-30 SCSI), SCSI Disk Mode and the modem card interface with its power-control and timing. It is written for developers and has no service procedures or component values.

Two of its figures disagree with Apple's other documents: its block diagram labels the main battery 6.5 V where the Service Source says 7 V, and it gives the weight as about 5.3 lb where Apple's specification page says 5.1 lb.

Logic board schematic (PU-58 EVT2)

[edit | edit source]

A 21-sheet schematic set for the PowerBook 100 main logic board, titled "PU-58 EVT2" in its title block (drawing 1-724-169-02), in Sony's drawing format, scanned without a usable text layer. Sheet 1 shows the connectors: J1 DC in, J2 sound out, J3 external ADB, J4 serial, J5 trackball, J6 external SCSI, J7 floppy, J8 internal SCSI and J9 modem. EVT2 is a pre-production build, so designators and values can differ from production boards, which carry Sony number 1-640-290 and Apple part 661-0673.

Both files were found on bitsavers (pdf/apple/mac/powerbook/100/); the schematic is byte-identical to MacDat's powerbook_100_EVT2.pdf.
