PowerBook 140 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Apple documents for the PowerBook 140 family: the motherboard and daughterboard schematics and the developer notes for the PowerBook 145 and 145B. The Service Source and the PowerBook 140 and 170 developer note have their own pages, PowerBook 140, 145, 145B and 170 Service Source and Macintosh PowerBook 140 and 170 Developer Note.

Motherboard schematic, 050-0409

[edit | edit source]

Schematic, Mother Board, Mac PowerBook, Apple Computer drawing 050-0409, revision 01 (engineering release), 17 sheets, scanned as 17 PDF pages without a text layer. Each sheet is marked "Apple internal use only". Sheet 1 shows the port and internal connectors: J2 modem, J3 printer, J4 ADB, J7 external SCSI, J8 modem card, J9 floppy, J10 the stacking connector to the daughterboard, J11 internal SCSI, J12 battery thermistor and J13 battery clip. Its reference designator table gives the last designators used as C153, D18, F1, L18, Q40, R215, RP1 and Y2.

The scan is the motherboard used in the 140, 145 and 170, Apple service part 661-0708. It has no parts list, so component values must be read from the sheets.

Daughterboard schematic, 050-0410

[edit | edit source]

Schematic, Daughter Board, Mac PowerBook, Apple Computer drawing 050-0410, revision 01 (engineering release), 11 sheets, scanned as 11 PDF pages without a text layer. Sheet 1 shows the RAM expansion connector J1, the interconnect connector J2 to the top-case interconnect board, and the stacking connector J3 to the motherboard; the ROMs are U6 and U7. The drawing does not say which of the three daughterboards (661-0707 for the 140, 661-0788 for the 145, 661-0709 for the 170) it shows.

Both schematics were found on bitsavers (pdf/apple/mac/powerbook/140/) and are byte-identical to the copies on MacDat. Owners cite them in repair threads on 68kMLA.[1]

PowerBook 145 developer note

[edit | edit source]

Macintosh PowerBook 145 Developer Note, Apple Developer Technical Publications, 1992, 11 PDF pages. It describes only what changed from the 140: the 25 MHz processor with a 16 MHz power-saving mode, 2 MB of soldered PSRAM, the family comparison table and the Gestalt values (25 under System 7.0.1, 54 under 7.1). No service or board-level information.

PowerBook 145B developer note

[edit | edit source]

Macintosh PowerBook 145B developer note, Apple, 1993, 12 PDF pages. It describes the move of all 4 MB of PSRAM to the daughterboard, the free RAM expansion slot (2 MB or 4 MB cards; a 6 MB card wastes RAM), modem compatibility (no PowerBook Express Modem) and the fact that software cannot tell a 145B from a 145.
