Power Mac G4 Cube Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Power Mac G4 Cube Service Source is Apple's service manual for the Power Mac G4 Cube. The hosted copy is 122 pages, © 2002 Apple Computer, with "Updated June 2, 2003" on the cover. It has three chapters: Take Apart, Troubleshooting and Views. Like Apple's other Service Sources of the period it is module-level, with no schematics or component values. Page numbers below are PDF pages, with the manual's own chapter page numbers where they help.

Contents

  • Take Apart (p. 2): General Instructions and tools (3), Computer Enclosure (4–6), Battery (7–8), Power Button Gasket (9–10), AirPort Card (11–12), Memory (DRAM DIMM) (13–14), ATA Hard Drive (15–18), Plastic Shell from Enclosure (19–22), Top Plate Assembly with Power Button Gasket (23–27), Top Plate Cable (28–29), Power Button Board (30–31), Support Bars (32–33), AirPort Antenna (34–38), Power Cable (39–43), Video Riser Card (44–48), Video Card (49–52), 28.5-Volt Power Cable (53–56), NMI Board (57–58), Modem Board (59–60), DC-to-DC Board (61–66), Logic Board (67–74), Processor Card (75–76), Ethernet Card (77–78), AirPort Door (79–85), ATA Ribbon Cable (86–94), Optical Drive (95–101)
  • Troubleshooting (p. 102): Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board (103–104), Power Adapter Verification (105–106), ROM and Processor Verification: Power-On Self Test (107–109), Symptom Charts: Startup and Power (110–113), Sound and Video (114), Memory and Modem (115–117), DVD Player and USB Devices (118–119)
  • Views (p. 120): screw locator and exploded view for the video card, modem board, top plate assembly and optical drive (121–122)

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The logic board needs a "trickle" supply of 28 V from the external power adapter to turn on. A lit green LED on the DC-to-DC board is a good sign; the full check is 28 V (+0.5 V, −1 V) at J3 on the video riser card, whose cable runs to J11 on the logic board (pp. 105–106).
  • The PMU is reset by pressing S1 once, under the video card at the end of the board away from the video ports, after checking that the battery reads 3.3 to 3.7 V; Apple warns not to press it twice (pp. 103–104).
  • The power-on self test reports through the power light: two flashes, no memory detected; three, incompatible memory types; four, no memory bank passed (pp. 107–109).
  • A power button that lights when touched but goes out when released, with no start-up, is a DC-to-DC board that has moved in its connector in transit: reseat it (p. 112).
  • A Cube that turns itself on or off, or wakes or sleeps at random: Apple's chart works through placement, Energy Saver and power connections, then the serial number. Year and week codes 036 to 039 get a new power button gasket (a customer-installable part); 040 and later get a strip of Kapton tape, 32 mm by 3 mm, under the proximity switch plate on the power button board; top plates marked 805-2807 get a new top plate or EMI gasket (pp. 112–113).
  • Memory must be PC-100 SDRAM, and Apple's related article title is "Power Mac G4 Cube: Must Use 35 mm RAM DIMMs" (p. 115).
  • The DC-to-DC board's J2 connector should read about 5 V at pin 1 and 12 V at pin 4, with pins 2 and 3 ground (p. 111).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics, board parts lists or component values, and nothing inside the external power adapter, which Apple replaces as a unit when the verification fails (p. 110).
  • No exploded view of the whole machine with part numbers: the Views chapter covers only four assemblies and their screws.
  • Nothing on the cosmetic marks in the clear enclosure that early owners reported.
