Power Macintosh 7300, 7600, 8600, and 9600 Computers is Apple Computer's developer note (© Apple Computer, Inc. 1996), 30 PDF pages. It is a delta guide to the 7300/166, 7300/180, 7300/200, 7600/200, 8600/200, 9600/200 and 9600/200MP, describing what changed against the 7500, 7600, 8500 and 9500 they replaced, including the new tower enclosure of the 8600 and 9600.

What it settles

  • The 7300/166 processor actually runs at 168 MHz (Table 1-2, p. 4).
  • The 8600 and 9600 tower takes DIMMs up to 1.255 inches tall; other Power Macintosh models take only the 1.1-inch height (pp. 16, 18).
  • DIMMs may use EDO or fast page mode devices, and the computer always runs them in fast page mode (p. 18).
  • The 9600's original display card does not support sync-on-green monitors (p. 6).
  • The CD-ROM drive is named as the AppleCD 1600i (p. 5), where the Service Source names the 1800i; Power Macintosh 7300 gives both.

No full architecture or connector pinouts; those are in the earlier notes for the 7500/8500 and 9500. No service procedures.
