The owner's guide lists the three Apple cards it was designed for: the Macintosh Display Card 4•8 gives up to 256 colours, and the 8•24 and the accelerated 8•24 GC give 16.7 million. Macintosh models with built-in video drive it directly.<ref name="og">Apple Computer, ''AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor Owner's Guide'', text edition, hosted as [[:File:AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor Owners Guide.pdf]]. A monitor driven by a Macintosh LC the picture is 3/16 in narrower at each side, and that the horizontal size control corrects it.<ref name="ssts">''AppleColor High-Res RGB Monitor'' Service Source, Troubleshooting, Symptom Charts, pp. 2-12 (PDF pp. 10-20).</ref> == Using the monitor == The monitor is meant to sit on top of the computer. A plastic height-adjustment bar clips to the guides underneath and raises it by 1/4 in on its wide side or 1/2 in on its narrow side. The supplied power cable plugs into the power socket on the back of the Macintosh, so the monitor only has power while the computer is on; the Macintosh LC has no such socket and needs a separate mains cord.<ref name="og" /> The monitor degausses itself at power-on. Apple suggests pressing the manual degauss button, just below the on/off button, if the monitor has been left on for more than three days; the screen flickers for a few seconds while it works. Brightness should normally sit at the detent in the middle of its travel, with contrast at maximum, and the picture takes about 20 minutes to settle after switch-on.<ref name="og" /> == Hardware == The monitor is built from separate modules: deflection board D, the video colour board assembly (boards H, B and Q on a metal frame with the external video connector), CRT board C on the tube neck, contrast control board J and a separate power supply. Each board, and the CRT assembly, has separate Rev. A and Rev. B part numbers.<ref name="ssta">''AppleColor High-Res RGB Monitor'' Service Source, Take Apart, pp. 1-47 (PDF pp. 22-68).</ref><ref name="ssev">''AppleColor High-Res RGB Monitor'' Service Source, Exploded View (PDF p. 126).</ref> {| class="wikitable styled-table" style="width:100%; text-align:left;" |+'''Service part numbers by revision'''<ref name="ssev" /><ref name="sgparts">''Macintosh Displays and Video Cards'' service guide (1996), AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor chapter: main circuit boards pp. 149-150 and parts list p. 151 (PDF pp. 167-169).</ref> ! A deflection board has.<ref name="sgparts" /> The power supply carries two fuses that must not be swapped: F101 is 6.3 A, 250 V (Apple 740-0109) and F102 is 3.15 A, 250 V (740-0108).<ref name="ssfuse">''AppleColor High-Res RGB Monitor'' Service Source, Take Apart, Fuses, pp. 29-31 (PDF pp. 50-52).</ref><ref name="ssev" /> == Known faults == Apple's symptom charts point at two Rev. A weaknesses. A monitor that loses its picture and power light after a few minutes, or shuts down intermittently, can be cured on a Rev. A deflection board by replacing the high-voltage capacitor before the board itself. A raster that slowly stretches and shrinks vertically, at switch-on or once warm, was corrected on Rev. A deflection boards by fitting capacitors C522 (0.022 µF) and C525 (0.047 µF) and resetting the vertical hold.<ref name="ssts" /><ref name="ssjit">''AppleColor High-Res RGB Monitor'' Service Source, Adjustments, Jitter Correction, pp. 44-55 (PDF pp. 113-124).</ref> Both procedures are on the [[Apple Color High-Resolution RGB Monitor Troubleshooting Guide|troubleshooting guide]]. A thin grey horizontal line across the lower third of a lit screen is the support wire of the Trinitron aperture grille and is normal.<ref name="ssts" /> == Documentation == * [[AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor Service Source]]: Apple's 126-page Service Source and the owner's guide. * [[Apple Macintosh Displays and Video Cards Service Guide (1996)]]: chapter 9 has board drawings and a fuller parts list. == Maintenance and repair == The [[Apple Color High-Resolution RGB Monitor General Maintenance|general maintenance guide]] covers cleaning, degaussing and Apple's geometry, cutoff, white balance and convergence adjustments. The [[Apple Color High-Resolution RGB Monitor Troubleshooting Guide|troubleshooting guide]] has Apple's symptom charts. No capacitor list has been published for this monitor; Apple's service manual gives no component values apart from the two jitter capacitors. A CRT holds a dangerous charge after the power is removed: follow the [[CRT Discharge Procedure]] before working inside. == Gallery == <gallery mode="packed" heights="200"> File:AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor, side view.png|Side view showing the ventilated cabinet (photo: Ben Boldt, public domain) File:AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor geometry controls (Service Source).png|Geometry controls with the rear cover off (Apple Service Source) File:AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor exploded view (Service Source).png|Exploded view with part numbers (Apple Service Source) </gallery> == Related pages == * [[Apple Color High-Resolution RGB Monitor General Maintenance]] * [[Apple Color High-Resolution RGB Monitor Troubleshooting Guide]] * [[Apple 12" RGB Display]] * [[CRT Discharge Procedure]] == References == <references /> {{Navbox-AppleVintageAccessories|state=collapsed}} [[Category:Apple Vintage Accessories]]
