This guide covers cleaning, power supply care, keyboard maintenance, and common failure points specific to the 1200XL. == Regular Cleaning == === Internal Cleaning === * Remove the six screws on the bottom cover to access the motherboard. * Remove the six screws securing the PCB, then the eleven push rivets securing the RF shield halves. * Use compressed air to remove dust from the motherboard, RF shield surfaces, and component leads. * Clean the cartridge edge connector (J4, 30-pin) with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 99%) and a lint-free swab. * Clean the SIO connector (J1, 13-pin right-angle) contacts with IPA. * Inspect for corrosion around the bridge rectifier (CR8) and voltage regulators (A1, A2). === External and Case Cleaning === * Clean the aluminium top cover and smoked plastic trim with a damp microfibre cloth. * Do not use abrasive cleaners on the brushed aluminium function key nameplates. * Clean the RF cable connector and channel 2/3 switch (SW3) with contact cleaner. * Clean the 5-pin DIN monitor jack (J2) and 9-pin D-type controller jacks (J5, J6) with IPA. === Keyboard Cleaning === * Remove the four screws holding the keyboard to the top cover. * Disconnect the 15-pin Molex keyboard connector and 5-pin LED connector. * Clean individual keycaps with mild soapy water; allow to dry fully before reassembly. * The 1200XL uses a '''mylar membrane''' contact layer beneath the keycaps. Do not bend or crease the membrane. * Clean the membrane contacts gently with IPA if keys are unresponsive. * Inspect the 15-conductor ribbon cable for damage or oxidation at the Molex connector pins. == Power Supply == === External Transformer (Ingot PSU) === The 1200XL uses an external step-down transformer (part CA017964) that converts 115 VAC mains to '''9 VAC''' output. This is different from many later Atari power supplies. * Inspect the power cable and connector for damage or fraying. * Test the transformer output with a multimeter set to AC volts.
