<templatestyles src="Template:StyledTable/styles.css" /> The 160 is built like the 140: a top case holding the keyboard, interconnect board and inverter, a motherboard and a stacking daughterboard in the bottom case, and the display on two clutch hinges. Apple's Service Source for the 160/165/180 series gives the take-apart steps; owners' findings are added in each section. == Opening the machine == The boards contain static-sensitive CMOS parts; wear an earthed wrist strap. # Shut down, disconnect the adapter and remove the main battery. # Open the I/O door, bow the middle of the door and unhook its two lower pegs. # Remove the five Torx screws in the bottom case: a T-8 for the small screw at the rear connector panel, a T-10 for the others. Lift the back of the top case, disconnect the interconnect cable and lift the case off, unhooking the two tabs at the front. # On reassembly, fold the cable as Apple shows; a wrongly folded cable can short. == Daughterboard == Separate the daughterboard from the motherboard with Apple's logic board take-apart tool after removing its four T-8 screws; rocking or peeling the boards apart damages the connectors. The green heat pads on the daughterboard are delicate. If one is missing or damaged, fit a replacement from Apple's kit 076-0069 in exactly the original position, as a pad that hangs over a chip's edge can short its leads. Apple also warns that a third-party RAM card must not cover or displace the pads. When a daughterboard is replaced in a 160 or 180 with a serial number from FC233xxxxxx to FC241xxxxxx, Apple's instruction is to fit the revised sound jack insulator, 922-0591, on the motherboard as well. == Case and hinges == The plastic hinge mounts in the display housing and the screw standoffs in the base break with age. jmacz rebuilt a 160 whose case was falling apart, printing new standoffs (he posted the STL files) and grafting a 3D-printed piece onto the broken rear port cover hinge; mitchW fixed failing hinge mounts on a 140 and a 160 with 3D-printed brackets. To reach the clutches, remove the bezel and display and then the clutch covers and screws, as on the 140; see 140 General Maintenance#Case and hinges. == Display == The capacitors on the LCD driver board and inverter are the 160's only electrolytics apart from one on the trackball, and the values are the same as the 140's. See 140 Capacitor Replacement Guide. The inverter comes off with its shield attached; Apple says not to remove the shield and, when replacing an inverter, to fit a new shield. Set the brightness and contrast pots and actuators to their outer positions before refitting. The CCFL tube dims with age, and a new tube restores brightness. == Batteries == The NiCad main battery is the same part, 661-0013, as the 140's. jmacz found the pack contains two groups of five cells, each about 16 Γ 49 mm, in parallel, with thermal fuses and no smart circuitry; desertrout rebuilt one with ten new cells in the original arrangement. Apple's handling advice is the same as for the 140: no more than two weeks in the machine without the adapter, a full discharge and recharge once a month, and no more than six months in storage without a charge. Rebuilding and the backup cell are covered on 140 Battery Replacement. Apple's test for the backup cell is on 160 Troubleshooting#Before you start. == Memory == The PSRAM card plugs into the expansion connector on the daughterboard. Handle it by the edges, do not force it against the key, and press only on the edge above the connector; afterwards the memory total should be 4 MB plus the card. Apple's specification gives 85 ns as the minimum RAM speed and 14 MB as the maximum. == Storage == The internal drive is a 2.5-inch SCSI unit. 3lectr1cPPC considers the original Conner and Quantum drives unreliable now, rates IBM-branded ones higher, and recommends a solid-state SCSI replacement; a non-Apple drive needs a third-party formatting utility. The 160 supports SCSI disk mode with Apple's HDI-30 SCSI Disk Adapter cable. See Hard Drive Maintenance and Repair. == Related pages == * 160 * 160 Troubleshooting * 140 Capacitor Replacement Guide * 140 Battery Replacement * Recommended Tools == References == <references />
