The '''Service Manual for the TV Tuner Pack (PAL) for Game Gear''' is Sega Enterprises, Ltd.'s own 36-page service manual for the Game Gear TV Tuner accessory, covering three PAL models: '''MK-2101-05''' (I, PAL — England), '''MK-2101-18''' (B/G, PAL — Germany) and '''MK-2101-20''' (B/G, PAL — general Europe).

* '''The TV Tuner is an alignable analogue receiver, not a digital accessory.''' There are seven separate alignment procedures, and a recapped or repaired tuner that has not been re-aligned will not work correctly. This is the only document on this wiki with a Sega alignment procedure of this kind.
* The tuner has two boards: PCB-1, the video board, and PCB-2, the TV receiver board, joined by a flexible flat cable to connector K401. Capacitor and resistor designators are grouped by circuit block, 1xx, 2xx and 4xx on PCB-2 and 7xx and 8xx on PCB-1.
* '''It is two boards, PCB-1 and PCB-2''', and every alignment step names which one it applies to.
* Sega says the adjustments are needed only after particular components have been replaced, and lists the control for each: L201 and L202 for video IF and AFT, VR201 and VR202 for RF AGC delay, VR1 to VR4 for the tuning dial, and trimmers on PCB-1 for gradation, RGB phase (TC701) and PLL (TC801).
* '''The designators are blocked per board''', not interleaved across the unit: the parts list runs C01, C7, C20–C22, then C101–C105, C201–C224, C401–C410, C701–C720, C803 onwards. A designator without its hundreds digit is meaningless here.
* The system voltage inspection gives go/no-go figures. With 5.0 V and 34.0 V fed to K401, TP401 should read 4.5 V ± 0.2 V and TP404 32.0 V ± 1.0 V.
* '''It is PAL only, and region-specific within PAL''' — the three model numbers differ in their broadcast standard, so alignment figures are not interchangeable between them.
* The troubleshooting chart starts from a 9.0 V supply at the Game Gear's power jack and checks for about 0.65 V peak-to-peak video at TP207 on PCB-2. Its power supply check names L401, C410, R405, Z401 and C409 when the 32 V at TP404 is missing.
* The disassembly needs a special screwdriver for two of the screws (502), which Sega describes as "for LH2".

This wiki has no [[Sega Master System (Model 1)|machine]]-style article for the Game Gear — no overview page, no maintenance guide, no troubleshooting guide and no capacitor replacement guide. The three Game Gear documents hosted here are therefore the only Game Gear material on the site, and they are not cited by any article. If Game Gear pages are written later, these are the sources they should be built from.

The Service Manual for the TV Tuner Pack (PAL) for Game Gear is a 36-page service manual for the Game Gear TV Tuner, which plugs into the Game Gear's cartridge slot. The scan has a text layer. The manual names no publisher; its parts list gives Sega as the maker of the case parts, and its part codes (A01-, W22-, A86-) do not follow Sega's own numbering. It covers three PAL models: MK-2101-05 (system I, England), MK-2101-18 (B/G, Germany) and MK-2101-20 (B/G, general Europe).

The general specifications on the first page give reception of VHF channels 1 to 12 and UHF 21 to 69, operation from +5 °C to +40 °C, storage from −20 °C to +60 °C, dimensions of 107.2 (H) × 120 (W) × 39 (D) mm and a weight of 140 g without batteries.

What this manual settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The tuner has two boards: PCB-1, the video board, and PCB-2, the TV receiver board, joined by a flexible flat cable to connector K401. Capacitor and resistor designators are grouped by circuit block, 1xx, 2xx and 4xx on PCB-2 and 7xx and 8xx on PCB-1.
  • Sega says the adjustments are needed only after particular components have been replaced, and lists the control for each: L201 and L202 for video IF and AFT, VR201 and VR202 for RF AGC delay, VR1 to VR4 for the tuning dial, and trimmers on PCB-1 for gradation, RGB phase (TC701) and PLL (TC801).
  • The system voltage inspection gives go/no-go figures. With 5.0 V and 34.0 V fed to K401, TP401 should read 4.5 V ± 0.2 V and TP404 32.0 V ± 1.0 V.
  • The troubleshooting chart starts from a 9.0 V supply at the Game Gear's power jack and checks for about 0.65 V peak-to-peak video at TP207 on PCB-2. Its power supply check names L401, C410, R405, Z401 and C409 when the 32 V at TP404 is missing.
  • The disassembly needs a special screwdriver for two of the screws (502), which Sega describes as "for LH2".
